As a disability care worker, you will be providing support and assistance to physically and intellectually disabled individuals of all ages. You might be working in a care home, or you could also be required to provide support to disabled persons in their own home.

Your days will be very busy, and quite challenging at times. Every single day will be different from the next! Each little thing that you do will truly make a difference in the lives of the disabled and their families. At the end of the day, you will go to bed with a huge sense of satisfaction and the knowledge that your services are wanted and appreciated.

There are many opportunities available for qualified, compassionate workers who would like to apply for this job. But do ensure that you have a genuine passion for this kind of work, as it is not easy to care for disabled people. You might work with people from low socio-economic backgrounds, or with the very rich; and you will be caring for young people as well as the very old.

Disabled patients are in need of physical as well as emotional support. Not only will they need assistance ...
... in performing their daily activities, but they also need someone who can provide companionship and simply encourage them to do their best. With just a little positive reinforcement, these patients can lead a much better quality of life and live with tenacity, optimism, and will power.

Becoming a disability care worker requires a deep sense of commitment and responsibility. You should know that the patients under your care are depending on you to offer support. They might need your help to drive them around, or to perform household chores. You cannot shirk your responsibility as it will adversely affect their physical and mental well-being.

You should also have the commitment to undergo regular professional training that will keep you updated with the latest advancements in disabled care. You might need to catch up with techniques and services in this field so that the care you provide to  disabled people is of the highest quality possible. For some disability care centers, you will have to provide proof of the right qualifications and experience, before you are selected for the job.

As a disabled care worker, your hours may be long and the work could be strenuous. Some of your patients might have a poor attitude toward life as they are depressed or feeling low about their situation. It’s very important that you should perk them up with your caring attitude and sunny disposition, as a little positivity goes a long way! Only by giving selflessly of yourself, and by putting your patients’ needs before your own, can you become a successful caregiver in a disability care home. Even if the salary you receive is not what you would like, the rewards you will get in terms of the happiness of your patients are invaluable.

Some certification courses that you can undertake to equip yourself with the requisite knowledge and skills to take care of the disabled are Certificate III in Individual Support (Ageing, Disability) and Certificate IV in Disability. These professional accreditations will give you the skills required to provide care for people with disabilities, either in a community home or a residential setting.

These courses are designed to teach you to work with diverse people, follow safe work practices, and facilitate the empowerment of those with disabilities. You’ll be able to meet all their personal support needs, support and encourage their independence and well-being, and also have a warm and compassionate relationship with their families. You can undertake work in roles such as that of a disability support worker, disability team leader or supervisor, residential care officer, personal care assistant, and more.

The disability care sector is seeing unprecedented growth right now, and if you have an inclination toward this career, you will be in great demand in countries like Australia, the UK, Canada, Japan, Ireland, Europe and USA.
