Your Cadillac Deville Has More Life In It!
The Cadillac Deville was first introduced by General Motors in 1949 and had a long run until it was replaced in 2006 with the Cadillac DTS (DeVille Touring Sedan). Leading the luxury division of GM, the Deville was a full-sized touring sedan designed to transport passengers in smooth, quiet comfort. The upscale car was known for having a well appointed interior, leather seating, top notch audio systems, wood trim and more. The name DeVille is of French derivation and literally means "of the city" or "town". Over the years, the Cadillac DeVille underwent many changes in engineering and body style. New technological advances in safety were implemented. Perhaps the greatest advances came with the introduction of the Cadillac Northstar engine.
If you are considering a used car, the Cadillac DeVille may be a perfect choice. The Northstar engine which was used in this model since 1994 was rated one of the " 10 Best Engines in North America" by Ward's Auto World, beating out both Mercedes and BMW in horsepower per liter of displacement, fuel economy and cost of maintenance. Anecdotal stories of the engine still running smoothly ...
... after 300,000 miles are not uncommon. Others have said a used Cadillac engine will last until the wheels fall off.
What is it about a used Cadillac engine that is so appealing? The Northstar engine block is made of diecast aluminum with cast-in-place iron cylinder liners. Lightweight aluminum has the advantage of not rusting and also helps with fuel economy. Each cylinder head has two camshafts, one for intake and one for exhaust. The basic versions of the Northstar engine put out 275-300 horsepower, providing more than adequate acceleration and decent gas mileage.
Knowing that a used Cadillac engine will probably outlast the useful life of the vehicle, makes buying a Cadillac DeVille with high mileage a smart choice. All other things considered, the engine is the most important part of any car. As less informed owners and potential buyers tend to drastically depreciate cars that have 100,000 miles or more on their odometers, the price for a used Cadillac DeVille is often way below what its remaining life would suggest. Of course their are other factors to consider besides the quality of a used cadillac engine. The outward appearance, any dents, rust, fading paint and so on must be taken in to account. The vehicle may need brakes or maybe the air condioning is not working. Now, the Cadillac Northstar engine is not immune from problems, but, chances are the engine will hold up very well over time.
Maintenance of the used Cadillac engine is very simple. There is not too much to remember. A Northstar engine is equipped with 100,000 mile platinum-tipped spark plugs and 5 year, 150,000 mile Dex-Cool antifreeze. Regular oil changes are advised (the engine uses 7.5 quarts as opposed to most engines that use only 4 or 5 quarts of oil) to keep the used Cadillac engine performing at its best. Other than replacing the antifreeze once or twice and doing regular oil changes, the Northstar engine is pretty well maintenance free.
So, if you own a Cadillac Deville bought back in the 1990's and have taken good care of it, you should have many more years of use before having to send it to the automobile graveyard.
About: The used Cadillac engine is a selling point when looking for a good, previously owned, full sized luxury vehicle. Compared to other cars of similar age and with similar mileage, the Cadillac and its highly rated Northstar engine, may just be your best option.
