Chagas- A Neglected Tropical Disease

Understand more of the Chagas disease
Chagas disease, commonly known as American trypanosomiasis, is a chronic infection brought on by the protozoan parasite Trypanosoma cruzi. It spreads through the bite of a blood-sucking insect called a triatomine bug or kissing bug. Despite being identified 100 years ago, the a is still a significant social and public health concern in Latin America, Mexico, Central America, and tropical countries. Moreover, it is classified as a neglected tropical disease by the world health organization.
Risk of Chagas disease:
People living in rural regions are most at risk of contracting the triatomine bug since it thrives in poor housing conditions (such as mud walls and thatched roofs). This bug is widespread in many rural parts of the country.
Congenital transmission, blood transfusion, organ transplantation, exposure to contaminated blood, and other methods are also used to spread the disease. Due to the chronic infection, it may be fatal if untreated. It is also one of the major parasitic infections that burden public health authorities financially and in terms of disease ...

Chagas disease symptoms
There are acute and chronic phases of the clinical symptoms of Chagas disease. The patient may have no or only minor symptoms during the acute period. Patients who are symptomatic experience swelling or skin lesions on one eye, headache, fever, lymph node inflammation, oedema, breathing troubles, and body or chest pain. The infection may persist and progress into the heart and gastrointestinal problems during the chronic phase.
