Rotary Vane Pump: How It Works And Its Benefits
A rotary vane pump is a positive displacement pump that consists of vanes that are mounted to a rotor that is inside of a cylindrical housing. As the rotor turns, the vanes slide in and out, which pumps the fluid. Rotary vane pumps can be used for various applications, including oil production, fuel injection, and hydraulic power transmission.
Let's take a closer look at how rotary pumps work and some of their benefits.
How do Rotary Vane Pumps work?
As the rotor turns, the vanes create chambers that increase and decrease in size. This action sucks fluid into the chamber on the pump's intake side and expels it on the discharge side. The outlet port size is regulated by a valve so that only a certain amount of fluid can be discharged with each revolution. This design allows for very precise control over the flow rate.
The Benefits of Rotary Vane Pumps
Rotary vane pump offers several benefits, which is why they are used in many applications. Some of these benefits include:
1). They can run dry without damage:
If no liquid is pumped, the vans will not make contact with each other, ...
... so there is no risk of damage. This makes them ideal for use in applications where the liquid being pumped is not always present. The rotary vane pump is also self-priming, so it can start pumping even if no liquid is present.
2). They have self-priming capabilities:
Rotary vane pumps can push fluids against gravity, so they do not require an external priming system. This makes them much easier to install and maintain than other pumps. However, it's important to note that not all rotary vane pumps are self-priming; those that are not will require an external priming system.
3). They are highly efficient:
Because there is very little slippage between the vanes and the housing, rotary vane pump offers high volumetric efficiencies (up to 98%). This means that they require less energy to operate than other types of pumps, which makes them more cost-effective in the long run.
4). They have a wide range of flow rates:
Rotary pumps can be designed to have either high or low flow rates, depending on the application's needs. It can be used in low-pressure and also in high-pressure applications. This makes them very versatile and suitable for a wide range of applications.
5). They can handle viscous fluids:
The vanes in a
rotary vane pump can be designed to handle fluids with viscosities up to 10,000 cP. This makes them ideal for use in fuel injection and oil production applications. However, it should be noted that the maximum viscosity will vary depending on the pump's design.
6). They are less likely to leak:
Because the vanes seal tightly against the housing, rotary vane pumps have good sealing capabilities. This makes them less likely to leak than other pumps, which is essential in applications where leaks are not tolerated.
