Do you remember getting injured, it maybe just a paper cut or a broken bone? Everyone must have injured themselves in some time of their life.
Are you still healing or already healed ?

If you’ve healed, you’ve first hand experienced the healing power of stem cells. Because all the healing in your body is initiated by the stem cells. For those of you who didn’t heal from your prior injury, the loss of functioning is due to either you do not have enough stem cells to fully heal or the stem cells that you do have aren’t functioning optimally.

Wait up! Different portions of your body that possess stem cells are functioning quite well. For example, bone marrow or your adipose tissue. That’s fats, does anyone have extra fats that you want to get rid of? Most of us do. If you take stem cells from these fat tissues and inject them into injured parts, tremendous amount of healing can happen.
This is the essence of regenerative medicine. Your body’s own stem cells are used to treat diseases such as cancer. Stem cells are either sourced from own body or from an outside source such as an umbilical ...
... cord of a newborn. This therapy harvests the prowess of a single cell, MSC or Mesenchymal Stem Cell.

What is MSC ?

Mesenchymal Stem Cells possess the ability to differentiate into several mesenchymal tissues. They are attractive not only in regenerative medicine but also in transplantation surgeries. So, where do they exist? Every organ has their own progenitor cells, which gives rise to cells specific to that organ.

These MSCs are quick in their response as they collect data and communicate through chemicals called signaling molecules. They, very intelligently, release healing factors. That is why Dr. Arnold Kaplan, a stem cell researcher at Case Western Reserve, says, “MSC are injury specific drugstore”. MSCs are data-driven and the data is collected from the local scene.

Are they worth it ?

The “gold-mining” of MSC began with much enthusiasm in some developed countries, many unknown factors of scientific and ethical origin are left to be addressed before they can be made available for the public.
Within the frame of clinical research, MSCs have proven to be efficient in treating immune and non-immune diseases. They have receptors all around the organs and capillaries. In case of daily wear and tear, they immediately spring into action. Because of this property, they are often employed in tissue repairing work.

In addition to the healing property, MSCs have the potential to regulate immune diseases. When administered in patients suffering from lupus, MSCs had the ability to suppress inflammation and reduce damage to the liver and kidney tissues. Patients having severe steroid resistance cannot undergo transplantation because they’d be given steroid medications. In such cases, MSCs came to the rescue.

From the above accounts we can conclude that MSCs can be effective anytime in our body where there’s excess inflammation, disruption of immune system and daily wear and tear.

Many years have passed by since the first application of MSC was discovered and rapid advancement in the medical sector ensures if not quicker, efficient treatments. The pre-clinical trials and studies on MSCs as mentioned above showed encouraging results but it is not free from errors and unanticipated risks.

Several hurdles are to be overcome for it to become a mature treatment. There is no evidence about how the injected MSCs would interact with the body’s immune cells long after the treatment. Will long term monitoring be possible ? Which route for administering would be suitable for a particular disease, how will MSCs react in different cases, are there are any global safety control measure ? Above are some of the common questions that the research institutes have to answer to the regulating and government bodies.

Stem cell treatment in India is still a novel treatment. Leading hospitals and research centers have realized the potential of stem cells and have dug their heads deep into the research realm to unlease the true prowess of stem cells. Rapid advancement in this field would surely treat patients suffering from wide array of diseases. What do you think ?
