A less common terpene also adds pine flavors. This is the terpene guaiol, which has therapeutic benefits and appears in a few popular strains, albeit in small amounts.

Guaiol, also called "champacol," is a liquid terpene, unlike most, which are oil-based. Guaiol is found in the hard, oily wood of the tropical guaiacum plant, a subtropical evergreen. Cypress pines and other conifers contain guaiol-rich wood.

Its terpene profile has pine, wood, and rose notes. With a low boiling point for terpenes (92°C or 198°F), guaiol must be vaporized at low temperatures.

In vitro studies show that guaiol has anti-parasitic and antioxidant properties when used with other essential oils.

This study shows that guaiol can reduce tumors and strengthen the effects of chemotherapy in mice. Although not therapeutically beneficial, guaiol can be used as an insect repellant, like terpinolene.

More research is needed to fully understand guaiol's effects, especially in cannabis.
