What to do when you have a broken tooth or filling
A tooth that has been knocked out may be able to be reinserted if it has been handled properly – that is, picked up by the crown, rinsed gently, replaced into the socket and held in place, or placed in a small cup of milk or the patient’s saliva, and then getting to the dentist for treatment as soon as possible.

For a tooth pushed out of alignment the dentist may re-position and stabilise it.

A tooth that is broken, cracked or fractured needs immediate emergency dental treatment if the tooth is to be saved. Interim measures include: gently rinsing your mouth with warm water; apply a cold compress to minimise swelling; and take paracetamol to relieve pain. A digital x-ray and thorough exam will show whether the tooth can be saved.

Is a broken tooth or filling avoidable?
At Lillybrook Dental, our focus is on preventive care. We educate our patients to understand that many dental issues are avoidable, including broken teeth or fillings. How? By maintaining a regular oral hygiene regime, including regular visits to the dentist, which ...
... can help identify issues well before they arise and become costly, painful dental problems.

The key message here? Regular check-ups with your dentist and good oral hygiene routine will go a long way to keeping your mouth and teeth healthy, strong and free from decay.

Dental trauma occurring through sport can be avoided by using a custom fitted mouthguard made by Lillybrook Dental.

White Fillings
White fillings are a restorative dental treatment used to treat dental cavities or dental caries. If you have a cracked or decayed tooth, a white filling, also referred to as a composite filling is an affordable common dental treatment. The dentists at Lillybrook Dental will understand your specific needs and advise which is the most ideal tooth filling material for you.

The need for a dental filling can be easily overlooked by patients until a small issue becomes a more costly problem to repair. Before acting, many people accept discomfort when brushing or painful sensitivity when drinking hot or cold liquids. These are signs it’s time to speak with your dentist and gain a better understanding of what you might need.

While tooth fillings address cavities, they can also be preventive, halting decay and damage before they advance further. A dental filling can also relieve the pain associated with decay.

If tooth decay or damage has progressed too far for a white filling – when the damage has reached the nerve – it may be necessary for you to have root canal treatment and potentially, a crown.

Silver vs. white fillings: what’s the difference?
Lillybrook Dental only uses the highest quality composite filling material available for all white fillings. Unlike silver (metal) fillings, white tooth fillings:

Blend more naturally with other teeth because they are made from biocompatible materials which resemble the colour of teeth
Help support tooth structure by bonding to the tooth, which reduces the likelihood of breakage and the impacts of variations in temperature.
A key difference between silver and white fillings is the aesthetic, with white tooth fillings being tooth coloured, allowing them to blend in with the rest of the tooth. Tooth coloured fillings also have the ability to flex along with the tooth, thereby reducing the chances of tooth fracture.
If you have questions or concerns about white fillings and their suitability for your needs, just ask when you visit us.
