Top 40 Seo Myths Everyone Should Know About

Doing SEO simply means following a series of techniques and procedures to increase the chances of web users visiting your site. It is true that anyone can learn these techniques, and if you are a website owner and want to do your own SEO, you can spend time learning and applying these techniques. But SEO can be complex and touches on many areas, such as online marketing, coding, technicalities, and PR skills. Most business owners simply don't have what it takes to do a great job at SEO, which is why there are so many agencies available to help. A simple IT person or an online bookmark is often not enough if you really want to get good results.
Myth #3: META tags are very important
In the past, every page on your site needed META tags to rank well. Those are little snippets of code that would give Google a list of keywords and a description. The search engine would rely on that to find out what your website is about. Now, however, they have no influence on your ranking. Both Google and Bing stopped caring about META tags to index sites. However, they are not useless. For example, your description tag is the text ...
... that usually appears next to the link that appears in the search result, so it's still a useful part of the action.
Myth #4: Domain names with lots of keywords rank higher
In the dotcom days, the URL you used was very important. Google placed a lot of importance on the domain name, and if you could get a name with your keyword, you would get a huge advantage over other sites. This is why many companies bought domain names for a lot of money in the late 90's. But now the indexing process only looks at the actual content of your pages, not the domain name. That name is still important because people can still see it, but it won't get you any higher.
Myth #5: You must submit your site to Google or other search engines
All search engines used to have URL submission forms that allowed you to submit your site to Google and others. In fact, they still do, but that process is not necessary. The crawlers these engines now use are so advanced that any new site will be found within days, if not hours. The only time you need to worry about submitting your site is if, for some reason, it doesn't automatically get indexed after a few days.
Myth #6: Submitting a sitemap will improve your rankings
Google provides a webmaster interface and from there you can submit a sitemap, which is an XML file with links to each page on your site. Some site owners take the time to send such a file every time they make a change, but it's not necessary. Submitting a sitemap doesn't change your ranking, all it does is add pages that may not be indexed yet. If your site is typical and has links to all pages, it is not necessary.
Myth #7: SEO has nothing to do with social media
Before the arrival of Facebook and Twitter, SEO was the only technique to get traffic organically. But now social media is everywhere and the line between the two is rapidly blurring. While some marketers still think of SEO and social media as different beasts, the truth is that they are very closely linked. For example, Google now ranks its own social network, Google Plus, in its search results. If you can get enough influencers to talk about your product and link to your site, your recommendations will show up in every Google search result their friends do. This clearly affects SEO. On the other hand, Facebook has also started searching, recently introducing its Open Graph engine, which searches based on friends and interests. The two domains are thus closely linked and are drawing ever closer together.

Myth #8: Google doesn't read CSS files
Google bot used to be quite primitive and only saw text, so many people focused on the text part of their website. But now that engine is very advanced and reads JavaScript, CSS, and more. The crawler can definitely tell whether the presentation of your site is attractive to users or not. For example, if someone is searching on a mobile device and you don't have a mobile layout on your site, they may be missing out.
