Functions Of Thermometers And Broad Classification Of Thermometers:
Functions of thermometer:-
Usually, thermometers are used to measure temperature.
Other usages:
1. A pendulum can be constructed from a thermometer attached to a light string by which approximate gravitational acceleration could be calculated.
2. By measuring time needed for a thermometer released from the top of a building to hit the ground, approximate height of that building could be obtained.
Laboratory thermometers:-
About Laboratory Thermometers
Laboratory thermometers are used to measure temperatures or temperature changes with a high degree of precision. They are made of metal or glass and strengthened through processes such as thermal tempering or annealing. Several types of laboratory thermometers are commonly available. Liquid-in-glass thermometers are made of sealed glass and contain a fluid, usually mercury or red alcohol, whose volume changes relative to its temperature. Bimetallic strip thermometers include two different metals that are bonded together and expand at different rates as they warm up. Often, long bimetallic strips are wound into a coil and used with ...
... a dial. Electronic devices such as thermistors measure changes in electrical resistance and convert them to changes in temperature. Infrared thermometers are non-contact devices that convert infrared (IR) energy to an electrical signal that can be displayed in units of temperature. Other specialized or proprietary products are also available.
Industrial thermometer:-
About Industrial Thermometers
Thermometry is the measurement of temperature. Temperature can be measured via a diverse array of sensors and instruments. Industrial thermometers are used for temperature measurement in many industrial applications. Applications include process temperature monitoring in various industrial markets. Traditional liquid-in-glass design is typically used due to low cost and ease of use. Industrial thermometers are basic bulb style thermometers. Bulb thermometers rely on the simple principle that a liquid changes its volume relative to its temperature. Liquids take up less space when they are cold and more space when they are warm.
Industrial thermometers can have many display scale characteristics. These include Fahrenheit display, display range and scale divisions, Celsius or Centigrade display, display range and scale divisions. Industrial thermometers can display temperature in Fahrenheit or Celsius, or both in a dual scale thermometer. The display range is the minimum and maximum values of temperature that can be displayed. The scale division is the smallest division of degrees that can be displayed. Scale division may also be referred to as resolution in digital instruments.
Glass thermometer:-
A mercury-in-glass thermometer, invented by German physicist Daniel Gabriel Fahrenheit, is a thermometer consisting of mercury in a glass tube. Calibrated marks on the tube allow the temperature to be read by the length of the mercury within the tube, which varies according to the heat given to it. To increase the sensitivity, there is usually a bulb of mercury at the end of the thermometer which contains most of the mercury; expansion and contraction of this volume of mercury is then amplified in the much narrower bore of the tube. The space above the mercury may be filled with nitrogen or it may be less than atmospheric pressure, which is normally known as a vacuum.
Liquid in glass thermometer:-
A thermometer in which the thermally sensitive element is a liquid contained in a graduated glass envelope; the indication of such a thermometer depends upon the difference between the coefficients of thermal expansion of the liquid and the glass; mercury and alcohol are liquids commonly used in meteorological thermometers.
Bio-degradable thermometers:-
India's First Mercury Free Thermometers Environmentally safe non toxic, Biodegradable Liquid. Accurate, Precise, Repeatable:
With SafeTherm we are working towards reducing the usage of mercury in scientific laboratories, classrooms, industries and in our society. Our aim is to provide alternative to mercury containing thermometers with environmentally safe, non-toxic, non-hazardous and biodegradable liquid filled thermometers.
Wide temperature range:
SafeTherm thermometers are available in all typical range from - 20 °C up to 250 °C up to 250 °C
