Do you need to have a tooth or multiple teeth replaced? You most have two options: getting a dental crown or dental bridge. But which one should you get? Which one suits you best? The answer to this question depends on several factors, including the reason you need a tooth or teeth replaced, your medical history, how quickly you want your teeth replaced, and your finances, among others.

Before you finally reach your decision, it is important to first consult your dentist because there might be crucial factors specifically related to your oral health. These professionals would be more than happy to make recommendations based on your individual situation. Knowing the basics of how bridges and crowns work can help decide which will likely be a better choice for you.

Dental Bridges

Otherwise called a fixed denture, dental bridges are used to replace one or more missing teeth. Traditional bridges are attached to crows placed over the teeth on either ...
... side of the gap left by the missing tooth or teeth. This is where the false tooth or teeth are attached to the crowns.

There are other kinds of bridges. One is the Maryland bridge or bonded bridge, which is a framework with small pieces on either side that are bonded to the natural teeth without damaging them. This false tooth is also bonded to the framework. Another kind is the cantilever bridge which is attached to a crown on just one side.

If you are getting a bridge, you will need to visit the dentist office at least twice, sometimes even more. The dentist will prepare the teeth that will have the crowns in them, create impressions of the teeth and install the bridge. Depending on your individual situation, other steps might be required as well.

There are some disadvantages with conventional bridges, though. For one, it is hard to properly floss them, which leaves them more vulnerable to decay. Also, to make room for the crowns, healthy teeth will have be intentionally damaged or ground down. On average, dental bridges can last anywhere from five to seven years. They can fail because of cavities in the teeth supporting the bridge.

Dental Crowns

A dental crown covers a damaged tooth, or can be installed on an implant to replace a missing tooth. These are considered as the gold standard in tooth replacement because they look very natural, last a long time, and help keep the bones healthier. The way the crown is placed will depend on whether it is being used to cover a misshapen or damaged tooth, or if you need an implant post to support it.

Before the dental crown is installed, your dental professional will have to make an impression of your teeth so the crown can properly fit into your mouth. This impression is them used to create the crown. Until the permanent crown is ready, you might have to wear a temporary crown.

There are many different materials that are used to create crowns. Your dentist will recommend one that will likely work best for you depending on your unique situation. Crowns generally last for several years, and a crowned tooth is protected from decay in many cases.

If you have any questions on whether a crown or bridge is the best choice for you, contact a reputable dentist in your area now. These professionals can perform the necessary tests and assessments to see which option will best suit your needs.
