It is never as simple as walking into a mattress store, finding the ideal mattress in 5 minutes, and getting out of there. There are so many options available, and then your personal preferences also come into play. Before buying a mattress, there are many traits to consider, like height, weight, firmness, manufacturing material, sleeping position, and others. Fitting all these into one mattress could get tricky.

There are many options available in most mattress stores to choose from, like a hybrid, innerspring, gel, memory foam mattresses, and bed in a box. However, not everyone would be comfortable in every mattress or none of them. There are different types of mattresses for various personalities. Below is a guide for everyone who doesn’t know mattress differences.

Different Types of Mattresses

As we said above, there are different kinds of mattresses. You can find at least one that’d suit your personality and provide the support you need. Below are different kinds of mattresses and their benefits. The mattress guide will help you to choose better and faster.

1.Memory Foam Mattress

NASA ...
... invented the memory foam mattress in 1966 to provide better safety to aircraft cushions. However, they never used the prototype, and it’s widely used by American citizens today. Not only to make mattresses, but memory foam is also used to make furniture, pillows, blankets, and seats.

It took more than two decades to crack NASA’s idea of memory foam and make them inexpensive for ordinary folks by manufacturing brands. Tempur-pedic was the first mattress brand with memory foam mattresses in the Tempur-Pedic Swedish Mattress market in 1991. The brand made sure the new mattress was available for almost everyone and was not very expensive.

The primary of people using a memory foam mattress is because of its “sinking in” feeling. When you rest on this kind of mattress, it takes the shape of your body to provide comfort. As soon as you get out, the mattress takes its original form.

Various Memory Foam Mattress Benefits are:

Adjustable beds compatible
Pressure point relief
Spinal alignment support
Motion isolation
Resistant to dust mites and allergens
The extra comfort given by memory foam makes them the ideal choice for side sleepers as they need support on the shoulders and hips.

2.Gel Mattress

While memory foam is impressive in almost all aspects, people do complain about heat-trapping in the mattress. The denseness of the memory foam makes it difficult for air to flow well. The density of the foam is the cause of the temperature rise. As the night progresses, the heat keeps getting trapped, and you feel hotter with every passing hour.

However, you can ignore the heat trap with the help of a gel mattress. A gel mattress is a natural cooler because the gel is infused with foam. As the night progresses, the gel will take care of the heat around the foam and keep you cooler. The gel technology provides excellent comfort to restless sleepers.

3.Innerspring Mattress

If you look at the sales charts for the past few years, you’ll find innerspring mattresses to be in high number. However, lately, the trend is now moving towards memory foam and adjustable beds. Innerspring mattresses, also called a coil, have been in the market since the 1900s. Metal coils are used in the mattress to suppress and handle the weight we put on them, hence the name. The number, shape, and size of coils vary from mattress to mattress.

The primary reason for high sales of an innerspring mattress is affordability. On the other hand, the lifespan of these mattresses is also short compared to others. The mattress provides utmost support and comfort for as long as they last. Different types of coils available in a spring mattress are:

Continuous coils
Bonnell
Encased
Offset
Spring mattress also has two types of gauges- thin and thick. The type of gauge is helpful to determine comfort and durability. For example, thick gauge lasts longer and are firmer.

4.Hybrid Mattress
Hybrid mattresses are rapidly becoming popular as they provide mixed comfort of two types- innerspring and memory foam. The innerspring trait provides bouncy comfort with the softness of memory foam. Usually, there are one to three layers of memory foam or latex on the top and a coiled spring at the bottom.

The most significant benefit of a hybrid mattress is the experience of custom manufacturing. You may research a little extra for hybrid mattresses, but there are suitable options for everyone. For example, if you like springy bounce feel with advanced pressure relief and cool temperature, go for a hybrid with memory foam on top, coils at the bottom, and some variety of copper or gel infusion.

5.Latex Mattress
Latex mattresses are a more natural alternative for bedding as it’s a by-product of rubber trees. However, there is synthetic latex also among mattresses, but it’s always better to choose natural for superior comfort. Latex gives extra bounce, choosing between memory foam and latex a matter of preference.

For example, if you like to sink in the mattress, memory foam is for you. On the other hand, if you want to bounce more, latex is the one for you. Latex mattresses have two types of manufacturing processes, namely:

Talalay- the manufacturing process includes single pouring of latex for molding. This process gives a softer top and denser bottom.
Dunlop- in this process, mold is filled, and then air is sucked out of it. The mattress is then frozen, stabilizing its structure, giving a more consistent feel than Talalay.
