Summer footwear for 2010 reflects the key summer trend this year, the nautical theme. You will find navy, white and red aplenty, with nautical stripes everywhere as well as seaworthy symbols like anchors, rope detailing and shiny brass embellishments.

The deck shoe and the tennis shoe are making a comeback on the high street. Both tie in nicely with the retro travel trend, which looks back to English ladies and gents taking the grand tour during the 1920s and 30s. The deck shoe also incorporates the nautical theme and you will find a range of colours and finishes available. We recommend woven leather for a fresh take on an old favourite.

Wedges are a must have for the summer and for 2010, think big. Wedges are reaching new heights, and the higher the better. Look out for cork and natural finishes, like rope and wood to tie into the vintage travel theme, as well as bright floral prints and nautical detailing and symbols.

Sandals are strappier than ever this season, thanks to the success of the gladiator sandal last summer. From flats to killer heels, the gladiator look for 2010 is far bolder than last year ...
... with excessive detailing and over the top strapping and buckle detailing.

An absolute classic and a great way to tie in the indie geek chic look is to opt for brogues. Smart enough to incorporate the retro travel trend too, there are now more colour finishes available this year than last. Pretty pastels are perfect for summer, and as a change to classic tan and black leather, look for muted brushed suede tones.

A footwear classic that simply screams summer, the espadrille is all over the high street for summer 2010. So easily teamed with skinny chinos and jean shorts, you really have a huge choice when it comes to colours and prints. Opt for nautical stripes or natural khaki and olive green to tie in with the key summer trends.

If you are looking for heels for the summer, then there are plenty of bold choices on the high street for 2010. A major trend this year is the platform heel. The thick platform sole gives you added stability, allowing you to wear more towering heels than ever before.

We still cannot get away from the shoe boot. This summer sees a variety of new styles hit the high street, particularly slouched, pale suede finishes, extra strapping and buckle detailing and brogue styles that incorporate a cool 2 inch heel. These key womens footwear trends for 2010 were brought to you by Barton Loi. She recommends heading to the New Look website for the latest sandals, wedges and heels for summer 2010, covering all of the seasons key trends.
