Fuerteventura: The Technological Comission Of Unesco Approves The Plan Of Biosphere Reserve-00-6638
The Scientific Committee MaB (Man and Biosphere) of UNESCO, who met in Feb in the premises of the International Organisation in Paris, officially accepted the proposition of Biosphere Reserve for Fuerteventura that was elaborated by the Island's Cabildo in collaboration with remaining organisations such as the Canaries Government and the universities of Tenerife and Las Palmas.
This means that the proposition will be discussed at the close session of UNESCO's General Assembly within the next few months, for the explicit approval of Fuerteventura's proposition.
The Cabildo's Chair, Mario Cabrera, announced that the approval of the proposal by the Scientific Committee of UNESCO exhibe aknowledge in all the work carried out over the past few years in the involution of this determined text, abundant and succint, that includes a ample institutional consensus and profesional recognition that has been confirmed by important scientific authorities.
Notwithstanding, the explicit approval of Fuerteventura's proposition is not the conclusion of a process, but the beginning of a crucial stage for Fuerteventura's developing, ...
... that will have to get this Biosphere Reserve model into action, respecting the Island's natural values, promoting durable development where ethnographic activities of the Island and its rich biodiversity can coexist, confirmed the Island's Chair.
The proposition of a Biosphere Reserve in Fuerteventura contains the complete island's territory, as well as five marine miles off the Western coast and three miles on the rest of the island. In total it represents 352.812,6 has., of which 165.664,3 has. (47%) are on land and 187.148,3 has. (53%) are at sea. Those dimensions are thence sufficient to complete the tasks that are required, they are also quite superior to the average Biosphere Reserves in Spain, that are estimated at 81.683 has. including the largest surface which is at sea.
It is also nearly the first step in the declaration of National Park of arid areas of Fuerteventura which is an area that is being studied too.
The Biosphere Reserve of Fuerteventura is proposed with essential functions: protection of landscapes, ecosystems, species and genetic variety. Promote economical and human durable utilisation on socio-cultural and ecological levels. Disseminate environmental and cultural knowledge required for their protection.
