In many countries, also the US and very often southeastern states such as, for example, Alabama, Mississippi, Georgia, and Florida, deer hunting is a passion for hundreds and thousands of hunters.
In the so-called Black Belt that stretches across Alabama and northeastern Mississippi - but also in surrounding states and regions - whitetail deer hunting is very popular and draws hunters from all over the world every year. This, of course, has many benefits for the individual landowners that offer hunting leases to the public, but also for the greater industry and the state coffers as impressive amounts of money change hands in the form of hunting fees – and different taxes that are levied.
This is indeed a huge industry, which means that landowners have to compete for the best share regarding offering leases to hunters that come from far and wide to experience some great times as they hunt, either on their own or in the company of mates and/or family. This means, too, has to offer the best deer for the visitor. Hunters are prepared to pay good money for the quality buck and the best experiences, but not for sub-standard ...
... prey.
To achieve this goal, landowners know that good habitat management plans that consider a successful deer management plan is an essential start. When habitat and number of animals (such as deer) exist in harmony, it goes without saying that the best, most healthy deer can be raised on a certain piece of land. Good habitat is never a given: landowners have to employ those plans and principles that underpin the quality of the habitat where the deer roams so that the animals grow up to be healthy and in the best condition.
This, in turn, leads to a landowner’s destination being preferred over others, and to a successful, memorable trip for the hunter. Therefore landowners, more than ever before, employ the services of a habitat management company to put in place and into practice those habitat management principles and systems to benefit a landowner in terms of the quality of deer they offer their hunters, as well as hunting clubs that may return to their land year after year.
The wildlife habitat management service normally devises a plan which is for the greater benefit of all, and specifically to ensure the best buck roam the lands where hunters take leases to visit. Their activities include various systems and tasks right from clearing invasive growth to restoring vegetation and introducing additional processes to ensure shelter for the animals, water sources, and ample opportunity to forage for the best food.
To introduce and develop such systems can take time, therefore landowners must make sure they employ the services of a well-established habitat management company that gets involved in these and similar processes all the time, a service that understands that great habitat forms the backbone of the greater industry. If your habitat fails to attract good animals and can’t sustain them in good condition, hunters will not flock to your lands.
The managers have to plan, they have to prepare the land for animals to roam there, they often introduce food plots, they maintain good habitat and they restore disturbed habitats. When habitat is managed well, larger populations can live and thrive there. The biologist/manager will have to understand the quality of the soil, all relevant information such as how many deer can survive in a specific area. Therefore responsible culling needs to be put in place to ensure the habitat can carry whatever number of animals are seen to be ideal for the habitat.
Information related to the habitat where animals are found is important as part of the plan. Managers need to create an environment offering deer different foods such as grass, plant diversity with woody plants, and forbs (flowering plants with soft stems and broad leaves) often a requirement – also berries and legumes, for example.
White-tailed deer management systems consider these two important facets: proper habitat management and animal population management. Good management plans ensure the best habitat, food, and water for the deer, and population management ensures control in terms of deer numbers. When these are in harmony, great hunts are assured for landowners and their visitors.
