The gown is ordinarily the star of the show at any wedding, and it is also the thing that brides tend to shop for first and the item that takes the longest for brides to settle on. That is quite understandable, but once a bride has chosen her gown for her special day, the next critical task is selecting your bridal lingerie to go underneath your dress.

Bridal lingerie is not just for the wedding night, although that does play a large role. It can be fun to choose something that is flattering and has fun additions like bows or lace, but the reason for being careful when selecting your bridal lingerie goes much deeper than just that. Bridal lingerie should help your dress fit your body perfectly and flawlessly. And finally, it shouldn’t show underneath your gown and no straps or details should be visible either by shining through the fabric of the dress or peeking out from underneath the neckline, back detail, or slit, depending on the type and style of dress of course.

Selecting bridal lingerie is very personal because it has to be something that you like the look of, but it should also be tailored to fit your ...
... specific body type and be ideal for your bust size, and it should suit your gown as well. That is why choosing your bridal lingerie is a task best left until after you’ve decided on your dress.

The most important thing that brides need to remember is that most wedding dresses of the white or ivory variety are see-through to some extent, not to the extent that anyone will be able to see your body underneath the dress, but to the extent that white lingerie may be visible underneath the layers of the gown.

A semi-sheer or sheer gown will work best with nude or beige lingerie. However, if the gown in question is not sheer in any way or form, or even a color other than white, brides will have more freedom when it comes to the color of the lingerie they choose to wear. If your dress is not sheer, wearing cerulean, cobalt or even navy underwear can be a clever and fun way of incorporating your “something blue” into your final look – with no one being the wiser!

Seamless lingerie will be the best choice for clingy fabric or dresses that are very tight, and it should be noted that certain thin or sheer materials may show undergarments made of lace or other detailed fabric. A silk gown will also show every single seam, embroidery detail, buckle or bow, so it is best to go for minimalistic designs and seamless options if you are wearing a tight or clingy silk gown.

It is also important to consider the straps of any possible bra that you choose to wear. Dresses with straps and modest necklines will offer brides more choice when it comes to bras but some backless gowns, halter gowns or sleeveless gowns may pose more of a problem. It is important to find a bra that offers you support whether that one has straps or not. For brides with smaller bust sizes, it may be possible to simply go braless if your dress has a tricky neckline and opt for some nipple covers or pasties to avoid any potential nip slips on the big day.

If the choice of undergarments that suit your dress seems to be less than exciting, it may be smart to invest in a practical set for the ceremony and reception such as a seamless, nude, strapless bra and a seamless nude thong, and then to purchase a second, more enticing and sultry set to change into for your wedding night. Regardless of how you choose to go about shopping for your bridal lingerie, always remember to try on your lingerie with your gown before settling on your final choice.
