There was something astounding that I noticed about the Christopher Nolan Batman Trilogy. It was how grounded it all was. Almost every stunt was practical effects and the people felt real and fleshed out. Nothing too flashy or out there. Now that I’ve watched it again during the quarantine, even the dialogue seems more interesting than before. What stuck with me was the theme of escalation, something that Jim Gordon mentions to Batman by the end of first movie and a theme that sticks with the trilogy to the end. And it is not just a throwaway line either, it applies to the dangers of the real world as well. Take for example the people who check out lists for top 10 luxury cars in India and buy their own bulletproof cars whenever they’re serious about their transportation needs.

It is no secret that you can get a pretty good armoured vehicle for yourself for a high-end Mercedes car price in India. The advent of he pandemic has seen many people getting concerned about their safety and, with the economy the way it is, it doesn’t seem like the paranoia ...
... is going away anytime soon. Yet, there are few people who actually know about the details of how an armoured vehicle is manufactured. Unlike most other cars, you can’t just show up at a facility and pick your favourite one. Your bulletproof car needs to be catered specifically to the type of threat you are expected to face. So, do you go all-in for the top-level security version or save yourself a lot of trouble and money to settle for something less tough? Well, worry no more! Here is your complete guide to the armouring levels and the type of trouble they’re most suited for.

Since the most widespread method is the European EN 1063 standard for armouring, we’ll be following that for the entire article.

CEN BR I-III

Starting with the simple stuff, the CEN BR I level is the absolute basic that you can go for. Designed to resist the .22 caliber pistol and most melee weapons, this is the lightest layer of protection in the book. Most people who are concerned about carjacking and night-time break-ins often prefer BR II or BR III, which grants the car enough strength to resist 9mm pistols and .357 Magnum rounds. These low armouring levels don’t add too much weight to the car, and any damage to the vehicle is quick and inexpensive to repair.

CEN BR IV-V

This level of protection deals with resisting the effects of high-powered hand cannons and submachine guns. Low-powered rifles chambered with the NATO 5.56 X 45 mm ammunition also have difficulty penetrating this level of armouring. With CEN BR V level of armour, your car puts on some serious weight since the thickness of the BR glass is substantial and the armour plating is much more withstanding. Often, vehicles with BR V armouring have specially tuned suspensions and upgraded brakes to bring balance back in the hands of the driver.

CEN BR VI-VII

Ok, this is for the serious ones. If you’re one of those celebrities who own any of the top 10 luxury cars in India, chances are you have one with this armouring level in your garage. Built to chew up high-calibre rifle rounds like the NATO 7.62 X 51 mm, cars with this armouring level are often used by people under threats with organized attacks such as ambushes and kidnapping. A whole lot of weight is added to ensure the protection of the car, including sealing up the fuel tank with an MS sheath and reinforcing the door hinges. This also means that the car seems to handle like a truck, so better upgrades for the brakes and suspension are called for. Run-flat tyres are also a common feature of such cars.

CEN BR VIII and above

Remember talking about that premium Mercedes car price in India? Yeah, this is much more than that. Cars with CEN BR VIII and above level of protection are reserved for VIPs and world leaders, people who need to withstand a full-on assault in their vehicles. These cars can take on fire from high-calibre sniper rifles, including .300 Winchester and .50 BMG, while having a few other tricks up their sleeves. Unique methods like an emergency supply of oxygen, electrified door handles, and thermal night vision are found on bulletproof cars of this prowess. Moreover, while the specs of all armoured vehicles are confidential, these ones are kept top secret with the car made to look like just like any other vehicle out on the road.

With so many people faced with misery in their everyday lives, it is easy to understand how the crime rates have gone up. Be it a disgruntled employee or a misguided sect of extremists, trouble can find itself on your doorstep any day of the week. It is best to make sure that when you go out that door, you and your family return home, safe and sound. That is something that armoured vehicles offer, which is worth more than any amount of money you may have. Thus, choosing the right level of armouring is more crucial than you might realize. Now that you have a more in-depth knowledge of the facts, we hope this guide helps you streamline the armouring process for your car and decide on what you’re up against.
