L(aw)ndon Fashion Week 2010-00-6591

Will the fashion lawyers have the privilege of watching all the stunning catwalk shows or will they stay away from the crowd of hysterical stylists and models?
The fashion industry in London has established itself firmly in recent decades with British designers who have been innovating the British art and design scene. A mere fashion show hides behind the scenes a multitude of legal issues which need to be negotiated in order for the enchanting and ostentatious event to take place. From registered trademarks to distribution agreements, a designer has to respect certain rules when introducing his newest collection to public, press and prospective purchasers.
Although it is a niche area, fashion law is tailored from major disciplines such as commercial law, intellectual property law and business law. A fashion lawyer's focus can range from giving advice to up-and-coming young designers trying to establish their Businesses; to protecting their client's reputation against defamation in the media. Defining fashion law is difficult because it draws in the diverse requirements of this exquisite and artistic industry.
And ...
... has the credit crunch claimed many fashion law victims? Some major companies have cut down their sponsorship budgets for designers and litigation while dispute resolutions have also increased. Cases where designers clash with manufacturers concerning collection lines that did not convince the clientèle are not infrequent any longer. Nevertheless, the impact has not been as acute as in other areas of law.
London Fashion Week is the showcase for a lot of hard work by designers, models and stylists: is it fashion lawyers filling the front rows at the runways? No, fashion lawyers, unless they are invited by their respective clients to their shows, are not normally present in the middle of the fashion hype. Their regular office schedule tends to remain the same during that special week when the fashion world is humming.
Unveiling a passion for fashion can certainly be beneficial in fashion law as a commercial awareness of the specific needs of the client is expected. So when a designer wants advice on how to promote his jewellery brand internationally, an appreciation of the designer's artistic concept can be constructive. A perceptible sense of style can be of use but is not critical in this context.
The achievements of sophisticated, multi-disciplinary fashion law departments reflect the motivational effect of allowing practitioners to focus on supporting their chosen industry. The majority of fashion lawyers are not entitled to free clothes and products from the diverse labels they advise on a daily basis. Nevertheless, as a fashion lawyer you can fulfil your desire to work in close proximity to the world of fashion, especially as some of the bigger fashion labels have their own in-house legal departments.
