Create An Adaptive Ecological Restoration Amidst A Global Scale Of Complexity
Every aspect of our life is interconnected, be it be social, political, or ecological system. On this page, you'll get to have immense knowledge that will empower you to address the natural resource conservation and the challenges that come during this process and its management through the designed suitable solutions.
Theoretical and practical knowledge will help you create an adaptive and resilient ecosystem amidst a global scale of complexity and changes.
What is Ecological Restoration?
Ecological Restoration is a process of assisting the recovery of an ecosystem that has been damaged, degraded, or destroyed. The ecosystem is the dynamic communities of animals, plants, and microorganisms that interact with themselves along with the surrounding physical environment to form a functional unit.
Damage to the ecosystem refers to the obvious and harmful impact on the ecosystem, such as poaching, invasions of nonnative species, or selective logging.
Degradation refers to the chronic human impacts which result in the loss of biodiversity and the ...
... disruption of the ecosystem function, structure, and complexity, whereas destruction refers to the most severe level impact.
Degradation and damage remove all the macroscopic life from the ecosystem and completely ruins the physical environment. Ecosystems are mainly destroyed due to various human activities such as land clearing, urbanization, mining, and coastal erosion.
An ecological restoration initiates or accelerates the recovery of the ecosystem following the damage, degradation, and destruction of the ecosystem.
Basic info about Coastal Stabilization
The majority of the area which we serve was created by glacial activity. These landforms rise above the sea level up to 200ft and are referred to as coastal banks. These consolidated landforms created by nature (wind action and storm over wash) are referred to as Coastal Dunes.
Coastal Stabilization mainly focuses on the coastal banks and the various means by which they can be stabilized to protect the property and structures. Waves and tides erode the toe of the coastal banks.
An alternative like nourishment strategy provides an alternative to the permanent loss of the coastal bank itself. In this Coastal Stabilization process, a limited amount of sand is placed at the toe of the bank so that the erosion activity will remove the sand from these places, not the bank.
Wetland Consultants has suggested using Coir or coconut fibers because they have more longevity and are biodegradable. This coir's two basic products are mats (used for making envelopes, sand-filled tubes, and lifts) and rolls or solid logs. These coir products can last up to 7 to 10 years.
Coastal engineering structures such as concrete or timber seawalls, geo tubes, and stone revetments can also be used. They also serve as the best protective measures, and they are earlier permitted in Massachusetts to protect the buildings before Aug 1978.
Sand can be used to nourish the toe of the coastal bank. Therefore, toe protection is very crucial as this toe could protect the beach as well as the bank, and it could be re-nourished whenever necessary is felt.
This system of Coastal Stabilization could offer a low-impact degree of protection on the ocean-side coastal banks.
