For 2010, Mercedes-Benz introduced the brand new 5.5-liter twin turbo V8 engine, which will be used in various AMG models. The motor, named the M157, replaces the current highly-regarded 6.3-liter engine that had been used primarily in AMGs. With a peak output of up to 544 to 571 horsepower, this new Mercedes engine is sure to be a favorite of car gurus everywhere. There will also be an option to have a special AMG Performance Package motor, which will maximize the amount of horsepower and torque that this Mercedes engine can produce. Add to the amazing amount of horsepower the fact that the M157 has twin turbochargers and a spray-guided combustion, and you begin to see why this Mercedes engine is one of the most anticipated of all time.

An aluminum crankcase with ventilation holes to reduce friction and an air/water intercooling unit on the twin turbochargers only add to the allure of this magnificent Mercedes engine. Three driving modes also characterize the brand new SPEEDSHIFT MCT 7-speed sports transmission whose wet start-up clutch helps put other ...
... similar transmissions to shame. With a range between 800 Nm at 2000-4500 rpm and 900 Nm at 2500-3750 rpm, the torque output of the AMG 5.5 V8 biturbo engine ranks it very high in class performance. A smooth, quiet running Mercedes engine is the resultant of this transmission/motor match made in heaven.

The more conventional torque converter get thrown out the window in favor of a wet start-up clutch. This not only helps to save fuel, but it also provides added boost to the twin turbochargers powering the engine. An advanced fuel economy system is the result of the Mercedes engine's Controlled Efficiency mode. When the car comes to a complete stop, the Mercedes engine "C" mode will kick in and help the driver to save on fuel costs when all eight cylinders of the motor are not necessarily needed.

On the intake and exhaust sides of the Mercedes engine is a continuous cam shaft adjustment, which is a monitoring system for how much power is being used by the vehicle. A demand-controlled engine oil pump is another feature that helps to produce better gas efficiency without sacrificing the power that Mercedes engine owners have come to know and love.

Hauling power is also of little concern to this powerful Mercedes engine, as it has already been tested to be able to pull 494 lb-ft. at 1500 rpm with the maximum torque of 590 lb-ft. being delivered just 500rpm later. This level remains constant all the way up to 4,500 rpm. While it is good to know that you Mercedes engine could withstand hauling up to almost 600 pounds, the style and grace of a Mercedes AMG should not be compromised by hauling anything this large.

The summer of 2010 will be an exciting time for car enthusiasts everywhere, as it will mark the first time that the new AMG 5.5-liter V8 bi-turbo Mercedes engine will find it way to the public's eyes. It is an event that is anticipated the world over, and it will undoubtedly mark a new era in the storied history of the Mercedes replacement engine.
