Damage By Auto Transport--what To Do
Auto Transport usually occurs with little or no trouble for the customer. After all, companies that are in the business of moving vehicles are generally professional and experienced, and they don't want trouble any more than their customers do. Their drivers know what they are doing and they usually deliver their cargo in perfect conditionor at least in the condition in which those vehicles were picked up from their customers.
But accidents do happen—as do hail and flying rocks. So how should a customer handle the situation if his or her vehicle is delivered by the auto transport service in less than its original condition? What should a customer do if a new ding appears in the bumper or a rock has chipped the windshield during its transport? By thinking ahead and being proactive.
To save aggravation, time, and money, a customer should always fill out an inspection report on his or her vehicle at the time it is picked up by the auto transport service. This report should include the current condition of the vehicle, with space to note any damage in the paint, body, or interior. The report should also have ...
... space to write the mileage of the vehicle. This report—signed by the auto transport driver as well as the customer—will be the customer's most useful piece of evidence in case damage occurs during the transport process. The customer should keep a copy of the inspection report, and photographs of the vehicle at the time of pickup are a good idea, too.
When the auto transport service delivers the vehicle to its destination, the customer should inspect the vehicle again. He or she should fill out a new inspection report, making not of any damage that might have occurred during transport, using the original report for comparison. The auto transport driver should be informed of the new damage and he should sign the new inspection report as well. At that time—or as soon as possible—the vehicle owner should contact the auto transport company to discuss how to get the vehicle repaired. Professional companies carry insurance to cover damages to their cargo as well as their own equipment—customers should have made sure of this before turning over their vehicle to the auto transport driver. After all, it is in the auto transport company's best interest to handle such situations quickly and completely, and most companies will bend over backward to make their customers happy.
