Tips To Overcoming Procrastination

Be it getting down to that big project at work or making your fitness resolutions stick, getting motivated can be a major hurdle. Although most of us are comfortable with our daily routines and manage to get the essentials done, finding the inspiration to go forward with larger projects and goals can be challenging. Procrastinating on our goals is one of the main causes of stress and anxiety. When we avoid doing those things that we want to get done, the stress levels can build up.
Procrastination affects most people although to varying degrees. But some people have learned the secret to getting themselves motivated. Overcoming procrastination is one of the best things you can do for your emotional and physical health, especially if you are procrastinating on health and fitness goals. If you are one of those people who are continually saying they'd like to try something, but find yourself unable to follow through, keep reading in order to learn how to get yourself that old get up and go!
Tip One: Recognize the main cause of your procrastination and figure out ways to overcome it. For some people procrastination ...
... has to do with anxiety and fear. Perhaps you are simply afraid to try out that new class, or to start your new business and therefore continue to put it off in favour of easier chores. For others, it might be simply a matter of poor time management skills or difficulty with organization. Whatever the culprit might be, identifying it and finding ways to manage and allay your fears will help you remove the obstacle to your goals.
Tip Two: Do not replace the hard tasks with easier ones or mere busy work. Often times because we do not like feeling completely unproductive, we will busy ourselves with meaningless or, at least, less important tasks in order to avoid the one we know we need to be doing. We'll tell ourselves that we need to reply to our emails or start planning our holiday just when we could be addressing that larger task we have sitting on our plate. Try to avoid this trap by really considering what is most important. Some people live by the rule of never checking email first thing in the morning as this can be a severe distraction from more important matters.
Tip Three: Break up large projects to make them manageable. If it is fear that's kept you from achieving your goals it might be that the project you hope to achieve simply is too big to accomplish in an afternoon. As such, you may continue to procrastinate because there seems never to be enough time to really get to it. Instead of letting your fear get the better of you and letting excuses get in the way, spend that first afternoon breaking down the project or task into manageable chunks. When tasks can be accomplished in an hour or two you will be much more likely to get to them, than if they require days or weeks. Breaking things down will help you see that you can achieve your goals so long as you organize your time and energy efficiently.
Following these simple tricks will help you achieve your goals while avoiding harmful procrastination. Learning how to get yourself motivated is well worth the effort. Only then can you truly move forward.
