X-Ray systems are used in medicine to generate an image of the body's internal systems, commonly used for bones, arteries, and tissues. Doctors use X-Rays to detect, diagnose and treat many medical conditions in both animals and humans. They are used extensively in orthopaedics and in surgeries where doctors are fixing broken bones with screws or plates, locating blocked arteries, angioplasty, and removing tumours. These machines function as radiographs and use ionizing radiations.

The system generally consists of a control console operated by the radiologist or the radiographic technician. This power supply supplies the required voltage and current to the X-Ray tube and an X-Ray tube. The other special components are –

1. Generator: a device that is used to generate the X-rays from x-ray tubes.

2. Detector: an x-ray system has two types of necessary detectors. The first is an image detector like photographic plates or flat panel detectors. The second is radiation detectors like dosimeter and Geiger counter, which measure the amount of radiation the patient and the technician are exposed to.

3. ...
... B-P grid: this is a grid that is kept between the detector and the patient to reduce the scattering of X-rays for clearer images.

4. Shield: usually, lead shields are used to protect the technician from scattered x-rays.

Mechanism Of An X-Ray System:

The patient is made to stand or lie down at the designated place. The body is irradiated with a beam of X-rays, and the rays will be either absorbed or scattered. The remaining X-rays will be transmitted to the detector, which will record and save them. The detector could be a special film or computer software. The received rays are then processed to produce an X-Ray image. Radiographers usually take a single image unless otherwise specified by the patient.

Benefits of an X-Ray System:

· X-Ray systems are considered invaluable tools in medicine as they help in a wide range of diagnoses.

· They are especially important as they can diagnose or monitor a disease painlessly and without using any invasive method.

· They allow doctors to plan the treatment for many diseases/illnesses.

· These are most effective in surgeries as they help guide the surgical team to operate on internal organs, bones and tissues.

Risks Associated With X-Ray Systems:

Although the probability of risk is very little, there is some danger associated with X-Ray systems. The risk is mainly due to the ionizing radiation that is used in the machines. These radiations are dangerous as they can damage the DNA of the person exposed to them.

This exposure increases the probability of developing cancer in life by a very small percentage. The tissues are affected by a high level of radiations and can cause hair loss, cataracts etc. The risk is also dependent on several factors other than the dosage of radiations. The age of a patient plays a major role. X-rays are most dangerous for children. The risk also depends on the organ that is being irradiated, as some organs are more sensitive than others. There is also some research that women have a higher risk of problems associated with radiations than men.

However, the intensity of radiations used in these machines is very little and does not pose a major risk to life.
