An effective radiant barrier is able to reflect much of the radiant heat back into the direction of the heat source. Emissivity is the key feature in determining how a given product will reflect heat. It is an indication of a surface's ability to emit heat of reduction. The higher the emissivity level the greater the emitted radiation. A low emissivity of the radiant barrier is the most ideal quality as it indicates a higher rate of reflection while a higher number on the emissivity scale may not offer so good a radiant barrier.

Good radiant barrier insulations do not contain fibers or small particles. This enables a smooth installation of the barriers without the use of protective clothing. A radiant barrier should be able to allow water vapor to properly transfer through it so as to avoid condensation. Condensation can lead to water damage either through rotting or rusting.

When installing the radiant barrier, do it in the morning when the attic is coolest. Start installing the radiant barrier away from the attic entry point and work inwards. Pre-cutting the foil to a certain size reduces the frustration of rolling out the radiant barrier foil. When a radiant barrier foil is covered with dust it becomes useless in its intended function therefore always ensure that you clean the foil to avoid accumulated dust. A replacement of the foil is necessary when cleaning off the dust no longer assures you of optimal results.
