Engagement Ring Styles – Which Is Right For You?
One of the most important steps of buying an engagement ring is choosing the style. The setting of a ring plays such a big role in the overall finish of the ring, how it will look on your new fiancé's finger. It can be such a daunting process choosing the perfect engagement ring based on appearance and your loved one's personality. The good news is that choosing a ring style doesn't have to be difficult, each style has it's own pros and cons, so you can choose based on what you feel is right.
Prong and solitaire settings are probably the most common engagement ring styles you can purchase, they are classic settings with little metal claws that hold the diamond in place. Prongs are pointed, flat, rounded or V-shaped. V shaped is often used for princess-cut diamonds. The ring can have four or six prongs. The benefits of this style are that they raise the diamond up, ensuring it is prominent. It allows light to pass through the diamond and supports a host of diamond shapes and sizes. It is simple, clean and classic. The downside to this style is that the engagement ring can catch on clothing, they can loosen with wear, ...
... so ensure to have the prongs checked every two years or so.
Tiffany settings is another very popular engagement ring style scientifically designed by Tiffany & Co in 1886. This six prong setting has been designed to maximize light return onto the diamond. It is a plain band with knife edged looking prongs. The Tiffany setting allows light reflection, supports a host of carat sizes and shapes and is easy to maintain. It has a timeless elegance about it, though it can also catch on materials and over time, the diamond may become loose, so remember to have those prongs inspected on a regular basis.
Another choice when it comes to engagement ring styles is the bezel setting, which is probably the second most popular setting with a modern look, ideal for anyone with an active lifestyle. A bezel style holds the ring in place, encircling it. It is a thin custom made rim that holds the stone tightly. This style holds the diamond securely in place, which makes this a durable setting for an engagement ring. The bezel style secures the diamond in place, is sleek and modern in design and doesn't snag ion materials. It protects the diamond, reduces damage and is easy to clean. Be aware that this style does hide some of the stone, which means less light reflection.
Another of the beautiful engagement ring settings you can choose is the tension setting, which gives the impression that the diamond is suspended between two sides. An experienced jeweller will cut small grooves into the sides of the band to fit the exact diamond dimensions, using pressure to hold the stone in place. This style offers extra security using bezels or prong settings on the side or below the diamond to ensure it remains firmly in place. The pros of choosing this setting are that the stone is held in place offering a unique appearance with enhanced light reflection and a stylish look. The downsides include these rings being very difficult and expensive to resize, they tend to make the stone look smaller than it is.
The final popular style to consider is the channel setting, which enables the jeweller to set smaller diamonds in a row onto the band, having sparkling stones that are flush with the band. The stones are set closely together in grooves. They are often used to decorate the sides or the entire band. This style reduces the risk of snagging due to its smooth design. It is a secure way to hold the diamond in place, enhancing the sparkling with a sharp design without the risk of losing stability. The cons of this style are that it often takes longer to clean, with more effort than the other styles. It is also challenging when it comes to resizing or repair and it may hide the diamond slightly when compared to a prong setting.
