One profession that will be in demand is that of a welder. Welding is a high-tech job, requiring skill and technical knowledge. Welders can get their start in high-school, learning the craft in shop class, and then go on to enroll in a Louisiana welding programs at a technical college or trade school.

Welding Programs in Louisiana

The first degree an aspiring welder needs to earn is the A.A.S -- Associate of Applied Science in Welding Technology. This is a two-year degree. The curriculum will include classes on how to read blue prints and specifications, how to apply math to technical applications, and classes in career planning. Students will also have hands-on training in learning how to weld with tungsten inert gas (TIG) how to weld pipes, how to fabricate structural sheet metal and the appropriate safety and cutting practices for this hazardous profession. These programs can also include Louisiana welding inspector courses.

Once the student has graduated he or she must apply for a general welding certificate, from the American Welding Society (AWS). The welder's career can then progress with certificates ...
... in specific areas such as robotic welding (that is, wielding the robot which does the actual welding) and oxy-fueled welding.

In order to progress further in the field, aspiring welders need to complete a bachelor's degree in welding engineering, which is part of a precision metal working degree. This is a four-year program. Masters and PhD programs in welding technology are available as well.

Welders who do not choose to go on to a bachelor's degree will nevertheless continue to receive on-the-job training, from their places of business, to continue advancing in their chosen career.

Where to Go for Welding School

At the time of this writing, there are 146 colleges in Louisiana. Of these, 38 have welding programs.

In choosing where to go for their education, potential students should do some research into the percentage of successful placement of students from each institution, although typically geographical location and tuition amount are the driving factors.
