2007 Belmont Stakes Review
The Belmont Stakes in 2007 was a race for everyone to remember. The Belmont Stakes on June 9, 2007 made history in horse racing.
The race was particularly exciting first of all because of the way that the race was decided. The race took place in front of a large crowd. The crowd comprised of a large crowd of forty six thousand, eight hundred and seventy people.
There were seven horses that entered the race that year, including the winner of the Preakness Stakes, Curlin. Curlin was far and away the favorite to win the race, with odds of 11-10. The horse with the 2nd best odds at the derby was Rags to Riches, with odds of 4-1. The third favorite was Hard Spun, who had odds of 5-1.
From the very start of the race things looked very messy for Rags to Riches. The horse fell very early but was able to rebound despite giving a huge start to everyone in the field. Slowly but surely, Rags to Riches progressed through the field, making up for lost time at the beginning of the race. Curlin likewise started out towards the middle of the pack, but managed to slowly progress through the pack. Towards the end of the ...
... race Rags to Riches managed to make a complete turnaround after an absolutely terrible start, taking control of 1st place. Curlin came from behind very quickly, stepping in for a close 2nd place.
Over the last quarter of a mile the race came down to just two horses. The horses were Rags to Riches and Curlin. These two horses were almost neck and neck down the stretch. These horses continued on down the stretch until the very finish. Towards the finish Rags to Riches managed to pull just ahead of Curlin. As the race finished, Rags to Riches won by a head length over Curlin. With this stretch of a head, Rags to Riches was the winner of the 2007 Belmont Stakes. Curlin finished 2nd and Tiago managed to take third place. Rags to Riches overcame a terrible start and overwhelming odds in favor of Curlin in order to take the victory at the Belmont Stakes in 2007.
This was historic in the world of horse racing. It was very significant because for the first time in nearly 20 years a filly won a Triple Crown Race. The last time that a filly had won a Triple Crown Race was in 1988. In that year a filly managed to pull out a victory at the Kentucky Derby.
Although it had been only been 20 years since a filly had won a Triple Crown race, it had been much longer since a filly had won the Belmont Stakes. Previous to the 2007 Belmont Stakes no filly had won the race for more than 100 years. The last time that a filly had been the winner of the Belmont stakes was in 1905. Tanya was the name of the horse in 1905 that won the Belmont Stakes.
