Your nine-month pregnancy is just the beginning of your life with your baby. While it can be tiring and stressful, it’s a great time to form a bond before your bundle of joy arrives. Before finding out how you can bond with your baby, let's understand what your baby will experience while they are inside the womb:

Sound: At 18 weeks, your baby will be able to hear your heartbeat and your stomach growling as well. However, as your baby grows older, your baby will also be able to hear other noises. Usually, by 26 weeks, your baby will hear your voice and may also find it soothing. Your baby will also be able to hear the music you play. How loud are the noises? It’s not that much as your baby will be able to hear it at half the volume that we hear. However, extremely loud noises can startle your unborn baby.

Language: Yes, this begins in the womb. At 32 weeks, your baby will be able to recognise different vowel sounds.

Memory: It’s possible that once they’re born, your baby may remember certain sounds or tunes that were played while they were in the womb.

Feeling: At 18 weeks, you may find ...
... your baby to be more active during the night, and asleep during the day. This is because they feel your movements soothing and rhythmic, which can rock them to sleep. At 22 weeks, your baby can feel pain, while at 26 weeks, they may also respond to a hand rubbing your belly.

Now that you know what your baby experiences in the womb, let’s understand how you can use certain experiences to bond with your baby.

• Talk and sing to your baby. They can hear and will help them recognise your voice when they’re born.
• Rub your baby bump, or even gently massage it with oils or creams. It will help you and your baby to relax.
• When your baby kicks, you can push or rub your belly where your baby kicked so that your baby gets a response. You’ll soon find yourself having a conversation with your baby with the kicks and pushes.
• Play some music like lullabies or other calming music to help your baby relax.
• Start maintaining a diary about what you’re feeling.
• During an ultrasound, you can see your baby move inside your womb, thereby strengthening your bond.
• Avoid stressing yourself out, as your baby can feel that too.
• Start showering your baby with love and affection even before they’re born by getting their crib or room ready.

Carrying a baby sure gives mothers an advantage over bonding with your baby. However, that’s no reason for your partner to feel left out.

• Massage your partner’s baby bump, so that your baby feels your touch
• Feel the bump when your baby kicks
• Accompany your partner for ultrasounds and prenatal classes
• Read and talk to your baby

If any, the baby's siblings can also talk to your baby, sing them some songs, and feel their kicks. You can also get them involved in setting up the baby’s crib, going shopping for baby’s goodies, or even encourage them to hang a piece of their art in the baby’s room.

So, don’t wait for their birth to start bonding with your baby. Seal your bond even before you see their adorable little faces.
