Joint replacement infections
Joint replacement infections occur in the wound or around the artificial implants. Infection can happen anytime after the surgery. Joint replacement are made of metal and plastic, if bacteria gains access to the implants they may multiply and cause infection and it will be difficult for the immune system to attack back. Despite antibiotics and preventive treatments, some patients may require surgery to cure the infection.

Implant failure at hip-
Implant failure at hip- Hip replacements can fail due to several reasons, the most common is loosening, where the components detach from the bone. Friction from normal wear produces debris that may cause inflammation in the tissues around the joint. After some time, bone erodes and the implant loosens, that leads to pain and reduces mobility. At times the metal implants dislocate within a few weeks after the replacement. Failed hips need to be removed and replaced in complex revision surgery. This operation is less successful compared to the original hip replacement because bone loss makes the new implant harder to anchor.

Fracture neck of femur

Revision hip replacement
Revision hip replacement is performed to repair an artificial hip joint that has been worn out due to wear and tear of the prosthetic hip or due to an infection. This surgery is done to correct any problem in the hip so that it can function normally again.

Single stage hip revision
Single stage hip revision is done for patients who develop a deep infection in their artificial implant called as periprosthetic joint infection (PJI). This will cause severe pain, disability and in some cases death. This revision involves removing of joint, thoroughly cleaning the infected area and implanting a new joint.

In 2 stage hip revision, the joint is removed, and the patient is treated for about 8 weeks with antibiotics and then re-implanting the new joint. This t is the current gold standard treatment for PJI.

Acetabular defects
Acetabular defects may occur at the original arthritic process; this is commonly seen in dysplastic hips, but also found in failed cases of trauma or infections. Severe defects may happen in the setting of revision surgery, prosthetic failure, and migration, or osteolysis from cement or polyethylene wear particles. Also, the own bone removal of a well fixed cup can produce serious defects, especially when the technique is performed without specific tools without enough skills.

Hemiarthroplasty
Hemiarthroplasty is a surgery that is most commonly used to treat fractured hip. The procedure is similar to total hip replacement, but only half of the hip is involved. It replaces only the ball portion of the hip joint and not the socket portion.

In Total joint arthroplasty both the sides of a joint are removed and replaced by artificial implants. The most common joints treated are hip, knee, elbow and shoulder. It is also called as total joint replacement.

In total hip arthroplasty/replacement the damaged bone and cartilage is removed and replaced with prosthetic components.
