The True Detective actor spoke in detail at the Red Table Talk about when he was detached from his mother.

Matthew McConaughey got personal and honest about himself and said that he had distanced himself from his mother, Kay, for eight years. He was quoted as saying in the interview that he and his mum “had a rough patch” for almost eight years. The cold feeling between them had started after the actor had made a name for himself in Hollywood and had got a taste of fame. However, all ended well, and the mother-son duo healed all the wounds in 2004.

... would always try to connect with his family on Sundays, and in that call, he would share things with his mother. However, his problems began when the things he shared with his mother started getting leaked to the media, and they started showing up on the 6 O’clock news every other day.

He remarked that the things he would share with his mother out of innocence and trust started hindering his career.

In addition to revealing professional details about him, McConaughey also remarked that she called “Hard Copy” to their family home on one occasion and showed them his bedroom and bathroom before revealing embarrassing details about him.  He went a little further and said that his mom crossed all the limits when she told “Hard Copy” how she found him with his girlfriend during a private moment and how she once entered his washroom and caught him pleasuring himself.

McConaughey revealed that watching his mom revealing all those things to the media was unbearable for him, and he had to straighten himself up and be more professional.

His mom Kay also responded to his comments and said that she was happier than him for his success. We can all agree we are always like a child to our parents no matter who we become later on in our lives. Perhaps, Kay didn’t know about media reputation and all, but she would have never intentionally done something that would have destroyed her son’s future.

McConaughey was happy to reveal that he fixed things with his mother in 2004 as he became less self-conscious. He decided to let his mother stay in his life and let her do whatever she wanted.

On one occasion, he invited her to a red-carpet event and told her that she has all the freedom to reveal all those embarrassing stories once more.

Let us not all judge McConaughey for estranging his mother. He is a tremendous actor and is a nice person if his costars are to be believed. Rust had to do what he had to do.
