Epilepsy is the name of a group of functional disorders of the brain. Epilepsy is a central nervous system (neurological) disorder in which brain activity becomes abnormal, causing seizures or periods of unusual behavior, sensations, and sometimes loss of awareness. Brain conditions that cause damage to the brain, such as brain tumors or strokes, can cause epilepsy.

Around 50 million people worldwide are affected by epilepsy. Anyone can develop epilepsy. Epilepsy affects both males and females of all races, ethnic backgrounds, and ages. Nearly 80% of people with epilepsy live in low- and middle-income countries. It is estimated that up to 70% of people living with epilepsy could live seizure-free if properly diagnosed and treated. The risk of premature death in people with epilepsy is up to three times higher than for the general population.

CAUSES OF EPILEPSY ARE AS FOLLOWS:

1.Hypoxic Injury during birth.
2.Head injuries that occur during birth or from accidents during youth or adulthood.
3.Brain tumors.
4.Genetic conditions that result in brain injury, such as tuberous sclerosis.
...
... 5.Infections such as meningitis or encephalitis.
6.Stroke or any other type of damage to the brain.

SEIZURE SIGNS AND SYMPTOMS MAY INCLUDE:

1.Temporary confusion.
2.A staring spell.
3.Uncontrollable jerking movements of the arms and legs.
4.Loss of consciousness or awareness.
5.Psychic symptoms such as fear, anxiety or déjà vu.

THERE ARE DIFFERENT TYPES OF GENERALIZED SEIZURES INCLUDE:

Absence seizures -An absence seizure causes you to blank out or stare into space for a few seconds. They can also be called petit mal seizures. Absence seizures are most common in children and typically don't cause any long-term problems.

Tonic seizures – A tonic seizure causes a sudden stiffness or tension in the muscles of the arms, legs or trunk.

Atonic seizures -The sudden lack of muscle strength, or tone, can cause the person to fall to the ground. The person usually remains conscious, and may not always fall down.

Clonic seizures - characterized by repeated jerking movements of the arms and legs on one or both sides of the body, sometimes with numbness or tingling the person may not be aware of what's happening.

Myoclonic seizures - Sudden body or limb jerks that can involve the arms, head, and neck. The spasms occur on both sides of the body in clusters, especially in the morning.

Tonic-clonic seizures -usually begin on both sides of the brain, but can start in one side and spread to the whole brain. A person loses consciousness, muscles stiffen, and jerking movements are seen. and take longer for a person to recover.
