What Medical Billing Is And Why Doctors Don't Do It Themselves
While many doctors will say that the act of saving lives and making people better is not a business, hospitals and other similar medical facilities might say otherwise. At the rate at which medicine prices and medical bills rise, it is easy to say that the medical profession is a business in its own right.
Traditionally, doctors graduate from medical school with the premise that they will practice medicine and deliver patient care. Running a business, however, is not part of that premise. To them, running a business should be left to the business professionals. However, the catch twenty-two is that medical practice is a business and needs to be properly managed and run as such. Running a hospital or medical office includes certain administrative procedures and overhead costs. They need to impose certain fees in order to acquire and maintain medical equipment, supplies and medicine.
However, from a doctor's perspective, it is not their job to maintain and operate the medical facility. They need to maintain focus on their very delicate profession, as it can often literally lead to life and death situations, and they ...
... need not be distracted by issues with billing and payment processing. These are jobs best left to medical billers.
Some hospitals and medical offices have their on integrated billing department. But others prefer to employ outsourced medical billing service providers to do the job for them. It is the job of these medical billing companies to organize medical bills and statements, and comb through them for errors.
Not only that, medical billing service providers are also relied upon to negotiate with collection agencies, answer patient's questions about their health-care plans and the office's billing routine, and spend hours on the phone with insurance companies on a client's behalf. The large number of medical specialties, countless medical conditions and diseases, the multitude of health insurance companies, and billions of patients everywhere can easily make the job a gargantuan task.
If there were no medical billing companies, or if their jobs were left to the doctors, these medical professionals would simply be overwhelmed and flooded with paperwork. They would not be able to provide top quality medical services if they also had to consider billing and insurance concerns.
