Frequency of Injuries Today
• Injuries, the number one killer: Injuries remain the most widespread cause of loss of potential life before the age of 65. In fact, they are the leading cause of human deaths today. Prevention Of Injuries And Violence Research by the National Safety Council reveals:
• Unintentional injuries are the biggest cause of death among people aging between 1 and 44 years.
• Motor accidents ranked as the top causes of unintentional death for this age group.
• Men aged 35-44 are three times more likely to die in a motor vehicle crash than women.
• 97% to 99% of injuries are caused by our own errors and mistakes.
• Road Accidents in India: The number of deaths in motor vehicle accidents in India is the maximum, globally.
• Rise in Challans: To control these accidents, a steep rise in challans was put into motion recently. Unfortunately, it was of no avail because there was only a slight reduction in the number of deaths.
• Distracted drivers: Sadly, there has been an increase in motor vehicle accidents due to a sudden rise in distracted driving ...
... (including cell phone usage, texting and eating while driving). Evidence also suggests that a motorist’s use of sleeping medications almost doubles the risk of motor vehicle accidents.
• Need for helmets: In India, approximately 1,00,000 people are injured each year while riding bikes and motorcycles. Fortunately, the rate of helmet use(by bicyclists and motorcyclists) has significantly increased in India because of the recent helmet laws. Even so, young men appear to most likely resist wearing helmets.
• The General Mindset: Most of the Motor vehicle operators in India have a general tendency to evade the traffic laws. They don’t like wearing seat belts even though most of the new cars have an alarm for a car running without a seatbelt tucked. Most of the motorcyclists, scooter and moped users don’t wear helmets even though there are heavy fines against it. Because of this sheer lack of obedience of the law, people get injured easily. One needs to well realize the importance of these laws, and of their own life.
Leading Causes of Injuries
• Firearms and Depression: In 2016, a total of 16,500 people were killed in India. A variety of causes contributed to it, be it in a gun homicide, unintentional shooting, or murder/suicide. In any case, having a gun at home increases the likelihood of homicide by nearly three times and that of suicide, five times. Even so, educating people to recognize and get treated for depression alongside restricting their access to lethal weaponry has been found to reduce suicide rates, greatly.
• For Young Adults: Research statistics reveal that among young adults, homicide and motor vehicle accidents are major causes of death due to injury. Males aged 16-35 are at especially high risk for serious injuries and deaths from accidents and violence. In fact, deaths from firearms have reached an epidemic level in India. It has taken numerous lives and is still en route to take more. We need to curb it, in order to sustain public safety.
• For Older Adults: It has been seen that unintended tripping/falling remains the most common cause of accidental death of older adults. Furthermore, approximately one in every 3 injuries led deaths, also diagnosed with a traumatic brain injury. It is alarming to see how injuries contribute to the death of the elderly this way. • Exploitation;
• Neglect of older adults.

Initially, one tends to start losing interest in the objects of joy and entertainment. Further ahead, one starts to question the meaning and importance of various events of social relevance. And then, finally, one starts moving towards social seclusion and, eventually, depression.
