Steps To Follow To Help Your Child To Deal With Diarrhoea!
Diarrhoea is a tough condition to deal with and it's even tougher when it comes to kids. Restoring the fluids is the most important thing during diarrhoea. There are a lot of things that an adult can do to restore the lost bodily fluids but it's not so easy for the kids. Keeping in mind their everyday habits and food preferences, this makes it difficult for them to recover from a bout of diarrhoea. Let's see first what causes it, and then we can take a look at several measures to help your child recover from diarrhoea.
• Diet: High content of fructose and sorbitol have been seen to trigger diarrhoea in toddlers. On the other hand, a low fibre diet can also be a cause of diarrhoea.
• Intestinal issues: In some cases, often the food travels through the colon very quickly. This not only leads to less absorption of water but eventually leads to diarrhoea.
• Gut flora: Gut flora is important, but everyone's gut flora can react to foods differently. A healthy gut balance helps in keeping the individual healthy, a little imbalance can lead to conditions like diarrhoea.
So what steps should be taken ...
... when your child is suffering from a bout of diarrhoea? Is there any specific food for diarrhoea? If yes, how can it help? Let's take a look!
Keep a track on bowel movement
Keep a track of stools, right from how many times to if there's any blood in the stool. If you do find blood in the stool, see your child’s doctor/physician right away. At times, your child’s paediatrician may ask for a stool sample for proper diagnosis. In addition, consult your doctor if your child's diarrhoea is showing up some additional symptoms such as weight loss or poor weight gain, vomiting, fever, abdominal pain, etc.
Limit the fruit juices
Although fruit juices for adults are great during diarrhoea, it's the opposite for children. Limit the artificial juice intake as it contains fructose and sorbitol, which are not good if served in excess. Keep the total amount of juice, as natural and homemade as possible to help them recover faster.
Increase the fibre intake
Fibre helps in firming up the stools. From whole-grain cereals to bread, beans, and vegetables increase your child's fibre intake. Adding a little more fat to the diet may also help. Excess fat can be harmful but if your child isn't overweight and is pretty much active in physical exercises, then a little extra fat should be fine. Please ensure you consult your child's doctor/physician before settling on any dietary changes. Your doctor will ask you to add the healthy fat if needed, such as dairy, avocado, olive oil or eggs.
Try probiotics
Probiotic foods are one of the best ways to deal with diarrhoea regardless of age. It helps in restoring the balance in the gut and also ensures you recover the lost fluids. Enterogermina is India's no. 1 probiotic brand trusted by paediatricians. It maintains the flora-balance, improves your child’s immunity and provides gentle gut care during fighting diarrhoea. Also, it's colorless, odorless and tasteless making it easier for the children to consume.
Dealing with diarrhoea can be difficult and prevention of diarrhoea is probably the best course of action especially when it comes to children. Consult your doctor for the right dietary changes and probiotic suggestions when a problem like diarrhoea shows up.
