Cotton Masks For All – Know The Differences – Stop The Spread
Wearing cotton masks is the new normal…
It has become mandatory for all to wear a mask while stepping out of your home amidst the coronavirus pandemic. Not only for patients and COVID warriors, it is necessary that the general public should also wear masks, not necessarily the medical ones.
The scientific evidence and global consensus are clear: Masks can slow the spread of COVID-19 whether medical or non-medical.
The lockdown will continue in a relaxed manner for a few more months. While you continue maintaining social distancing, staying at home, frequently washing your hands, the wearing of mask is highly recommended once you step out of your homes. Face masks lower the chances of coronavirus entering the respiratory system through droplets still in the air from an infected person. Reducing the chances of inhaling the virus by wearing a protective mask that is cleaned thoroughly will be vital to stopping its spread.
“Your mask helps protect others, and other people’s masks help protect you “
World Health Organization (WHO) analysis
As per WHO analysis, if 50% of the population ...
... were to wear masks, only 50% of the population would be infected by the virus. If the wearing of masks by people is practiced along with social distancing and hand hygiene, we can definitely stop the spread. Once 80% of the population wears a mask, the outbreak can be stopped immediately.
Basic Idea of Medical and Non-Medical Masks
Now, let’s get to know the differences between medical and non-medical masks and why non-medical masks are recommended for the general public?
Surgical Masks are single time use and recommended only for doctors and health practitioners, caregivers, and people who are sick. These are single-use masks, fluid-resistant, and protect the wearer against large droplets, splashes and sprays, and other hazardous liquids. These are disposable and nonwashable and are usually 3-ply masks. The three-ply material is made up from a melt-blown material placed between non-woven fabric. The melt-blown material acts as the filter that stops microbes from entering or exiting the mask. Most surgical masks feature pleats or folds.

N95 masks: These masks are recommended for doctors and health workers performing procedures and testing of sick patients. The ‘N95‘ designation means that when subjected to careful testing, the respirator blocks at least 95 percent of very small (0.3 micron) test particles. It cannot be washed or sterilized and most effective for one-time use only, but can be reused after 3-5 days only when stored and kept in a safe place, nicely sealed. These are critical supplies that must continue to be reserved for health-care workers and other frontline warriors.
