Woodsball is a military type of paintball that imitates infantry combat in woodlots and fields. What differentiates a typical woodball game from other types of paintball, like speedball, is the terrain. A good game area can bring the fun to new levels or it can ruin it for good. Of course, nature provides plenty of raw materials for such a field but without further improvements, the game itself is not that great. With the help of this article we will try to offer some tips regarding how to setup a basic woodsball field.

First thing to do is to examine the potential area for setting up the field, if it is not at least a couple of acres, you should start looking elsewhere because a small field will not satisfy your needs. The shape of the field is just as important, if a small-sized woodsball field looks like a narrow rectangle, it will most likely shape the course of each and every game so that the vast majority of them will be almost identical. Simply put, the bigger the field, the better as you will have more variety for playing your favorite woodsball game with your friends and why not, family.

Next order of ...
... business after choosing the location, study the terrain very attentive. Some of the best woodsball fields offer a variety of terrain, starting from woodlots and open fields, continuing with slopes and flat ground and ending with, why not, a creek or two. Of course, there is not much you can do in order to obtain such a terrain, it is there or it is not. However, study the terrain very well in order to observe what minor or major improvements you can bring in order to maximize the fun.

After that, you should get rid of all the unneeded obstacles. For example, if your woodlot is by any chance second growth forest, it might be a tangle of thick underbrush. It will not provide efficient cover for a typical woodsball game which means that it is simply an obstacle which should be removed before the game. If among the property, there are old wire fences, do your best to remove them in order to prevent unwanted accidents. For clearing brush and old fencing, you should have mattock as well as a standard shovel.

Last thing to do is to think about the placement of your own obstacles: forts, ditches, bunkers, walls and other similar objects that enhance the fun. With this one, you need to get creative so that the fun will be complete. For example, a fallen tree can be piled into barricades. A standard paintball fort can offer a wide range of strategies to the game but they require to be carefully installed. If the field is mostly open, with few rocks and trees, then you will need more man-made obstacles to provide game cover.

One last important piece of advice, regarding the safety considerations - players that build a field by setting pieces of metal or stone can cause serious injuries to other players during the game which is why it is very important to choose the right obstacles in order to avoid unpleasant accidents. Existing structures on the paintball field may be structurally unsound, depending on their age and damage that may have been caused. Paintball players should proceed with great caution prior to using such structures. Have fun building the field and playing woodsball.
