Speedball is a derivate of paintball and it is considered to be a fast yet fun game that stresses the usage of bunkers during a match. It was introduced for the first time in Southern California out of little more than an open field and some plywood, the formalization of speedball helped to jump start the popularization of this now beloved sport.

A speedball field can be designed in various ways, but the vast majority of them are simply a variation on a common theme. Most of the fields have a rectangular shape and are about 50 to 60 yards long and 30 to 40 yards wide. The speedball field is usually flat and it has various heights of stationary bunkers which are spread throughout the entire field. With the help of this article you will be able to setup your own speedball field.

Location - ideally, a speedball field is installed on a completely flat ground, a ground that does not have brush, rocks or holes. The location of the field should be chosen either far away from the passing cars and pedestrians or hang netting around it in order to avoid unnecessary issues. The area of the speedball field should be accessible ...
... from a nearby road and does not require to be taken down once the fun is over.

Bunkers - they can be made out of numerous different materials and most of them will do the job. The professional inflatable bunkers work quite good but if you cannot afford them, there are other affordable alternative which will do just fine, here are some ideas: wooden spools, wooden pallets, old washers and dryers or plywood boards. What you need to do is to make sure that these bunkers are stationary and will not get knocked over by someone accidentally, it happens. It is not obligatory to cement the bunkers into place, just so you know.

Placement Of The Bunker - a small bunker or post should be placed at the back center of each of the fields where the teams will start. The remaining area of the field can be setup however you want it, remembering to avoid over-crowding the speedball field and also to place the bunkers as symmetrically as you can. You must be certain that the center of the field is fairly open so that many shooting lanes are available and the players have a clear path for running several yards. In many cases, a few taller bunkers are installed in the middle of the field while smaller ones are located at the sides.

Additional Information - it is not obligatory to get your inspiration from other fields, you have the possibility to create your own unique design, there are no limits as far as the imagination goes. Try different designs until you find the most suitable one for your needs. Various bunker placements will spice things up because you will have to think of new strategies to beat your rivals which means that the more you think about experimentation, the more things you will learn and of course, the more fun you will have with your friends.
