Hair transplantation is a procedure to transfer normal hair from one side of the body to a different. Its main use is in male pattern baldness. From this strip the individual hair follicles are then dissected out. The wound in the back of the head is closed with sutures. You may also combine FUT and FUE in one single patient.

In FUE, a special mechanized drill is used to drill out each follicle. One needle-like puncture is all that's needed. There’s no cutting during this method and hence no sutures or scar. The plantation method is the same. In this, a small incision is formed in the skin and the hair is then inserted into this nick. The hair gets attached into the region by mechanical action and even by fibrin clots.

The procedure is completed under local anesthesia. It’s a safe procedure with minimum inconvenience to the patient. Sometimes repeated sessions are going to be done over two or three successive days for large transplants.

Most transplants involve between 1000 to 2000 hairs. Some patients want larger and more dense hair, and therein case 5000 hairs or even more is also transplanted.

In the case of FUE, hair can also be transplanted. This is a big advantage of FUE. It allows for larger transplants than FUT. The patient can go back home on a similar day. Minimal precautions are needed for this. The hair once implanted will grow like his normal hair. It is combed, cut, and even shaved - it'll grow back normally. It’ll grey with age just like the other original hair.

A hair transplant can also be done in women. Women comprise up to 5% of cases during a typical hair transplant clinic. It is used to increase the density of hair in the front of the head where it's most visible.
