Not many know the difference between an orthodontist and a dentist. Most people would just associate any doctor that works in dentistry as a dentist. Both professions are under dentistry, but they also have various differences. It can be stated that using the word “dentist” is a broader term in comparison to an orthodontist who pursued a specialty. Here are some distinctions, you can take note of:

The Training

When it comes to completing the level of education and training, orthodontists and dentists differ. For the former, they have to complete further training even after they graduate from dental school. They have to go further than basic dental training. Often, it will also include a residency of two or three years. On the other hand, dentists must be able to complete four years of undergraduate education and four years of dental school. They then have the option to pursue further education by learning a specialty, such as orthodontics. They also have to pass a written exam and a clinical licensing exam. By passing it, they will have a license to practice.

The Work Done

Orthodontists specialize ...
... in doing treatments such as moving the teeth or aligning jaws. They also help in correcting gaps between teeth, crowded teeth, and more. They make use of tools like braces, Invisalign, and X-rays. While dentists help treat overall oral health, which means that they help treat cavities, gum disease, and other problems. You can also do regular check-ups or appointments with your dentist to maintain your oral health.

The treatments that both orthodontists and dentists do sometimes overlap, such as they can both treat with braces. But, there are also differences such as when it comes to straightening teeth, it is always best to get the help of orthodontists, and when it comes to performing dental cleanings and drilling cavities, you should choose to go to a dentist.

From whom should you get help?

As already mentioned, both of their work can have similar tasks. So, you need to be able to know which of the two you’ll want to get an appointment with. For dentists, they offer treatments that help check your oral hygiene, and orthodontists are the ones you visit when you need to fix your smile and straighten your teeth. They fix overbites and gaps between your teeth, among many other things. Another important distinction is that you only visit orthodontists when needed, while dentists are the ones you visit for a lifetime. Thus, go to your dentist if what you need to treat are cavities and such, and if you need someone who specializes in straightening your teeth, you’ll be advised to go to an orthodontist.
