The Art Of Raising Responsible Young Minds
Out of the many key traits that we want our children to showcase, perhaps one of the most significant ones is the sense of responsibility. The art of taking responsibility for your words and your actions is an admirable attribute in an individual, and it is surely the one that we would also proudly like to claim that our children have.
However, it’s not as easy to instil the sense of responsibility in young minds. A child might be obedient enough to do exactly as he/she is instructed, but that does not necessarily translate into an inherent sense of responsibility. For instance, we can ask our children to say sorry because they have hurt a friend, and they would promptly do so. But, did they say it to avoid further confrontation or do they really know how to take responsibility for their action? Thus, it’s important to inculcate a sense of responsibility in the young ones from an early age, and today we’ll discuss the ways that one can adopt to ensure it.
Letting children do their own work as much as possible
We know children might make a mess when we leave it up to them to do their work as much as ...
... possible. But, we are also certain that this way, they will gradually learn the right way of doing the work, and the next time will gladly volunteer to do the same work themselves. It is the small steps like this that pave the path for raising a responsible child.
Focusing more on letting them think rather than ordering them
We can always tell our kids things like “go and apologize to her”, “don’t rush through the stairs”, and so on. Orders like these enforce rules but don’t really teach children anything about responsibility. So, the key is to make them consider their actions, take responsibility for those, and make the necessary rectifications because they understand its importance.
Teaching responsibility when interacting with others
One of the important aspects of teaching responsibility to children is to ensure that they are polite and respectful in their interactions. As we mentioned in the article above, it is never enough to ask a child to apologize for his/her mistakes. The approach should be to make them consider the ways they can make it better so that their apology is genuine and heartfelt.
Praising their efforts when they take the right action
As adults, we don’t wait for acknowledgments or praises to do our duties and handle our obligations. But, it is a lot different from kids because the praises let them know that they have done something right. It motivates them to do more of that good work to earn more of that praise.
At Vidsan Charterhouse, recognized amongst the most reputed schools in Delhi NCR, even the youngest of our pupils know that it is their duty to make their bed, turn up for the morning assembly in time, and complete their assignments and homework, and so on. They understand the benefits they derive from following these routines, and thus, they willingly abide by it.
