Breast cancer is one of the commonest cancers in the world, affecting millions of women. The more common it is, the more it is surrounded by myths. To avoid yourselves getting misled by wrong information or rumors, know the facts about this type of cancer.

Myth #1: Lumps are the only sign of breast cancer
False.

Most women are aware of self-examination of breasts, in which the doctor asks you to feel for lumps on and around your breast area.

There are two things to note here, says a reputable doctor who conducts gynecological surgery in Noida Extension.
• If you have lump, it doesn’t necessarily mean you have breast cancer. It could be a harmless benign tumor.
• If you have no lump, it doesn’t necessarily mean you don’t have breast cancer. There could be lumps in or around armpits or your collarbone that are too small to be felt.

Myth #2: Diet and exercise can reduce the risk of breast cancer
True.

Diet, exercise, and your body weight impact the risk of getting this cancer. Sedentary lifestyle and heavy body weight can increase the risk.

According ...
... to gynecologists, you must maintain a healthy body weight. Be physically active as much as possible. Do yoga, swim, cycle, walk, or even do household chores atleast thrice a week. Choose any physical activity you like – the point is to move the body, say doctors.

Eat a nutritious diet, which contains more of plant-based foods.

Myth #3: Wearing a bra causes cancer
False.

There is no scientific evidence to support this statement. Doctors consider it an absolute myth.

Myth #4: Abortion increases risk of breast cancer
False.

In 2009, the Committee on Gynecologic Practice from the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists revealed that there is no relation between abortion and breast cancer.

However, according to doctors, your risk of breast cancer is linked to the levels of estrogen and progesterone hormones. They can promote breast cell growth. Women who give birth to their first baby much later in life (35+) or never give birth to a baby are more at risk of breast cancer.

Myth #5: Deodorants cause breast cancer
False.

The US FDA (Food and Drug Administration) and the National Cancer Institute have no evidence that show a link between the use of deodorants and getting breast cancer.

Myth #6: You can get breast cancer even if it doesn’t run in the family
True.

It does not matter whether you carry a family history of breast cancer or not. You are a woman. This fact is enough to put you at risk of breast cancer, says a reputable doctor who performs gynecological surgery in Noida Extension.

Myth #7: Men cannot have breast cancer
False.

Men can have breast cancer too!

Males also contain a small amount of breast tissue. Although the level of estrogen and progesterone in males are not that high to put them at risk of cancer, unlike women, yet there are cases in which men have been diagnosed with breast cancer.

So, males in the family should also be wary about it. Do not be embarrassed to talk to a doctor, in case you feel lumps at your chest area.
