Most of us have heard our dentist tell us that we should brush our teeth twice daily for two minutes each if we want clean and healthy mouth. But did anyone tell you that there are good brushing techniques and bad ones too? They can make or break the quality of effort put behind brushing and ultimately the outcome will be zero. For example: most of us think that brushing hard will allow the bristles to remove plaque in a better way. But this is completely wrong. When you press the bristles in a hard way they tend to mash them and they fail to do their job. Moreover you end up hurting your gums as well, which is unnecessary to say the least. In a similar way, vigorous scrubbing can lead to bad results as well.

How to Correct Your Brushing Technique?

We agree that unless you brush well, it will lead to the growth of cavities and gingivitis in your mouth but you need to be careful that you do not follow improper brushing techniques. Today, we are going to discuss three ways of correcting your brushing technique.

You should never scrub your teeth. There is a significant difference ...
... between scrubbing your floor and your teeth. Even though enamels are strong enough but that does not mean that you will opt for aggressive scrubbing. This can lead to gum irritation and even permanent damage in some cases. Instead opt for a short back and forth motion that is low on pressures. This will let the bristles do the trick.
Less pressure means better cleaning. Although this might go against all that you have been taught but in reality when you exert less pressure while brushing your teeth, the bristles don’t get mashed and as such they are better able to clean the plaque from the teeth. Try brushing in a way that you hold the toothbrush only with your fingertips. This will prevent you from putting too much pressure.
On an average it is seen that most of us don’t brush for the required 2 minutes. Most of us brush for hardly 30 to 45 seconds. As such the plaque is not cleaned properly. Lack of brushing gives the plaque more time to build up especially in areas that are hard to reach. Hence make it a point to brush for 2 minutes minimum. Use a timer if required.

Manual v/s Electric Toothbrush - Which One is Better?

With electric toothbrush you can expect better cleaning. They can reach the “hardtop reach” areas in the mouth. As such they are better at removing plaque from the teeth. In fact they can remove the plaque in a better way compared to the manual ones.

With electric toothbrush you can now reach every nook and corner of your mouth. Getting rid of food debris is no longer a big task. Hence, you will no longer have to worry about bad breath no matter what you eat.
