With a view to ensure total prevention against polio, the government had launched an injectable vaccine a few years ago, which is adequately not available to private doc-tors, claimed paediatricians. Speaking about the issue, Dr Pramod Jog, former president, Indian Academy ofPaediatrics, said, "To ensure complete pre-vention of polio, along with oral polio vaccine, injectable polio vaccine is also given by doctors. Presently, this injectable polio vaccine is not sufficiently avail-
able for private doctors and its production needs to be increased." In the wake of re-emerging polio cases, the government had launched the injectable vaccine in 2015. It is to be administered in addition to polio drops to double the pro-- tection. Dr Jog said that in the com-ing years, the oral polio vaccine is likely to be stopped and only the injectable polio vaccine will be administered to children for which its adequate production should be ensured. "The oral polio vaccine is tri-valent, which would not be

required in coming years. There have been no cases of polio in the state since 2011. The injectable polio vaccine ...
... is biva-lent which will be administered henceforth. The production of this vaccine is globally not much and India must find ways to increase production of inject-able polio vaccine which is the need of the hour," said Dr Jog. Speaking about the same, Dr Sanajy Lalwani, president of Indian Academy of Paediatrics, too, said that public health workers find it difficult to reach people regarding awareness of vaccination including that of polio.

PUNE: In Maharashtra around 28,000 children die each year clue to pneumonia and paediatricians have stressed on the need for the government to introduce pneu-mococcal vaccine in the state soon. (There is a growing need for immunisation for pneumonia as it continues to be a major cause of death among children under the age of five in Maharashtra, jaid Dr Sanjay Lalwani, medical director, Bharati Vidyapeeth Hospital and president of Indian Academy of Paediatrics (IAP), Pune chapter. "Last year, the health minister introduced pneu-mococcal conjugate vaccine in states like Himachal Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh and Bihar, where the rate of mortality of children due to pneumonia is huge. In Maharashtra, too, around 28,000 children lose their lives due to pneumonia each year. Hence, the vaccine to fight pneumonia must also be introduced in the state in the next two years," he added. He added that (along with Maharashtra, the pneumococcal conjugate vaccine needs to slowly be introduced across the country and for the vaccine to be intro-duced, the production of the vac-cine needs to be increased along
LESS COVERAGE Doctors from the city also raised concern that even after the government's efforts, presently, only around 60 per cent of the population of the state is covered under the immunisation programme. • Dr Doke said that remote regions especially tribal areas in the state and children from slums in cities are not reached through the immunisation programme. According to the data given by the IAP, India accounts for 20 per cent of children globally, who remain devoid of immunisation.
which many Indian companies need to come forward," he added. Sharing his views, Dr Prakash Doke, said, "For introducing any vaccine under the immunisation programme across the state, a lot of analysis needs to be done, on whether the vaccine causes any side effects or not. After analys-ing such factors and getting rele-vant data on the concerns related to the growth of the respective disease, only then the vaccine can get introduced."
