Having a beautiful, lush, green lawn is the hoped-for result of those who have yards designed for grass. Not only are healthy lawns beautiful to look at, they also increase the property value. Additionally it has been proven that a well-kept lawn acts as a natural water and air filter in cleaning the environment. Over the years most people have kept their own yards with little knowledge of ways to improve and keep their lawns healthy year-round. As research as developed over time there is now much evidence to show how a scientific approach to lawn care can really make a positive difference in the quality and health of a lawn.

While it may be said “grass is grass,” there is definitely more to grass than immediately meets the eye. Grass, like people, has a variety of differences, including which type of grass grows best in which type of soil, which type of fertilizer to use, the best way to keep disease and insects out of the lawn, and when to plant, water, fertilize, and mow. The science of grass has come a long way in finding answers to how to grow beautiful, healthy lawns.

Science has shown that each type ...
... of grass seed has a preference for a specific soil type. It is essential when planning a lawn to have the soil tested and then seek out professional help in learning the best grass to grow in that type soil. Sometimes improving the soil prior to planting or laying sod will help.

Science has also shown how vital local weather is to successfully obtain a lovely lawn. Too much water, not enough water, too hot, too dry can ruin a lawn, even one planted with great care. Growth is just the beginning. Maintaining is ongoing, year-round, in all kinds of weather. Planting a grass type unable to stand the extremely cold weather in Montana is as futile as planting a grass type unable to withstand a lot of bright, hot sun in Florida.

Science has developed grass seed that is disease resistant and can tolerate low moisture terrain. Science has even researched different types of fertilizer and which type is best for which type of grass. Speaking of which, the winner for best fertilizer is actually the grass cuttings themselves. When grass has become established and mowed to optimum length, leaving the clippings behind as you mow will recycle nutrients back into the lawn. There is even a term, grasscycling, for using grass clippings as fertilizer.

Mowing and watering grass has also been scientifically explored. Watering in the early morning to allow moisture to sink in before being burned in or late afternoon to allowing the moisture to be absorbed before the cool night turns the moisture into mold or mildew. Mowing should be done at regular intervals, keeping the grass at a reasonable length to avoid strain on the grass roots and blades. You should cut only one-third of the grass blade off at a time.

With the many requirements science has determined are needed to grow and maintain a beautiful, healthy lawn, it is often wise to hire a professional lawn care company. These companies can provide workers who are trained in the latest scientific knowledge regarding grass. Lawn care professionals also know the soil and grass types best suited to your area and will know how to have your soil tested as well.
