Using the AED
The following will guide you on how to put the AED to use once you have a victim.
• First, turn the AED on by either pressing the on and off button or lifting the lid of the unit.
• You will be directed using prompts and then the device will instruct you to place the electrode or pads on the skin of the victim. Place one of the pads on the right upper chest and the second under the left chest of the victim.
• Once the pads are in these positions, insert the pad connector to the AED, if they are not reconnected
• Nobody including you should be touching the victim. The machine will give a prompt “analyzing”. CPR efforts must be paused during this moment for the AED to check that the victim’s heart is experiencing V Fib and can be treated with a shock.
• No bystander should be in contact with the victim as they experience the shock. Press the shock button when you see the victim is “clear”
• The defibrillator will instruct you to resume CPR after you administer the shock. Leave the pads on the victim’s chest, the AED maintenance on and begin chest compressions for CPR.
