Here are a few ways you can deal with the lice outbreak and ensure that lice is treated properly so it won’t spread or return:

1. Don’t panic

The initial reaction to the news of a lice outbreak would naturally be to panic. However, panicking won’t solve the lice problem any sooner and certainly won’t make it easier if your child is the one who has been infested. Gather your thoughts, make a to-do list and create an action plan for getting rid of lice.

2. Contact your child’s school

If you learn that your child has lice, you should contact his or her school, as other children might be exposed and infested. While it can be embarrassing for your child, it’s important to let teachers or school administrators know about the outbreak so that it won’t get any worse.

3. Wash clothes and bedding

While lice can’t live for more than 24 hours without a human host, sharing clothing or bedding could have been the source for the lice outbreak. It’s important to wash all sheets, pillowcases, blankets, stuffed animals and clothing that may have come into contact with those affected ...

4. Decontaminate your home

In addition to washing all items that may have been exposed to lice, cleaning your home thoroughly will help ensure that lice are gone. Make sure to vacuum floors, furniture and rugs and mop floors with warm water. Also throw away any hair utensils that could have been exposed to or the source of the lice.

5. Get professionally treated

Licenders can help both treat infested persons with lice or screen those who may have been exposed. We have six treatment salons in Manhattan, Brooklyn, Connecticut and Long Island with appointments and walk-in options available seven days a week for screenings and lice treatments. Our one-time treatments dry out lice and their nits in just 30 minutes using a chemical-free AirAllé® device that is the safest and most comfortable way to get rid of lice for good. Also, after an AirAllé® treatment, your child is ready to go back to school the same day!
