On January 5th of 2010, the long-awaited UK Boiler Scrappage Scheme finally launched. If you don't already know, it focuses on replacing the least energy-efficient boiler models in all of the United Kingdom. This is important because some older, G-rated models can be rated at 70% efficiency or below. The plan, though, also includes other boilers that are presently unrated but still have an equivalently poor energy efficiency rating. Apparently, there are enough of these older models in circulation that the Energy Saving Trust believes it is time to update them to more green models. Estimations show that the overall regional contribution of CO2 will reduce 140,000t per year. While this will no doubt lower your homes emissions, it can also improve your utility bills.

In fact research suggests that just by improving your rating from G to A can save you 25% on your heating bill. Current savings estimations total as much as 230 pounds a year.

... which explains the necessity to update and install more efficient systems in regional households. Newer models run at an efficiency rate of 90 percent or higher which use less fuel.

Renewable heat technologies are still relatively novel, but they don't run on standard fossil fuels, further reducing the negative environmental affects the machines give off. That is why the Government is giving 125,000 households in the UK 400 pounds towards the installation of this upgrade.

Alternately, you could be eligible for a grant of up to 3,500 pounds under the Warm Front Scheme. This Scheme also allows for up to 6,000 pounds in incentives where oil, low carbon, or renewable technologies are recommended. The Warm Front Scheme similarly attempts to improve utility efficiency in regards to residence temperature control capabilities.

You need to satisfy several requirements in order to take part in the UK Boiler Scrappage Scheme. First of all, you must live in a home that you own or privately rent in England. If you are under 60 and you are the householder or tenant in the residence, you can only apply if your present boiler is in working condition and is the main residence heater.

If you are over 60, though, you can apply regardless of the working quality of your present boiler. However, in the second provision, the boiler must still be the primary source of heat in the home. You should also know that only private residents can apply, and not installers, manufacturers, landlords or housing associations are not eligible.

Currently, this scheme is not available to all countries in the United Kingdom because of particular assemblies and governments which determine these regulations in each country, respectively. Finally, if you want to apply, simply log on to the website and supply your full name, the address of the property where the unit is to be installed, the make and model of the scrapped unit and its replacement, and the company coming to do the work.
