Lewis & Kappes was established in 1985 by Ted Lewis and Phil Kappes, both established business and corporate lawyers. The firm grew to include more lawyers and opened a branch in Zionsville, besides its Indianapolis office. Teamwork, according the firm's website, is an important part of how they operate. It provides them the versatility needed to handle different aspects of a case. Lewis & Kappes, the website states, does not have an inflexible hierarchy where the worker reports to a boss. Rather, everyone works together on a case.
Also noteworthy are their client handling efforts. The firm maintains many channels of communications to enable clients or potential clients ...
... to reach them easily. Dossiers and records on clients are maintained meticulously for easy reference and better trial preparation.
The Firm has some high profile corporate clients on its portfolio. Lewis & Kappes strives to give back to society through its advocacy for nonprofit groups. It has undertaken cases on behalf of these groups, thus contributing to the welfare of the less privileged.
Besides trials, Lewis & Kappes also handles cases that require arbitration and negotiations. These are as challenging as trials before a court or tribunal. They require thorough preparation and groundwork on the part of a lawyer. They must possess an analytical mind that can cut through a haze of hearsay and false assumptions to reach the truth. The people at Lewis & Kappes are the firm's biggest asset.
The People
Lewis & Kappes has 20 directors, eight associates, three counsels, and five paralegal support personnel. Many of them have won awards and recognitions, such as Trial Lawyers of the Year. They are members of various bar associations and have been called to handle cases under any jurisdiction. They have also published papers in legal journals and taught at law schools. Many of them have worked with their university publications in editorial capacity. They are often invited to speak at seminars and conduct lectures.
Portfolio
Lewis & Kappes have experienced lawyers to take on civil litigation pertaining to corporate law, utilities, patent, taxation, and similar subjects. The major cases the firm has fought include Fraley v. Minger in 2005, which set a precedent for adverse possession for tax defaults in Indiana; Northern Indiana Public Service Co. v. Office of Utility Consumer Counselor, Indiana, where they were able to collect $3 million from the utility as annual charges; and a case where Lewis & Kappes convinced the court on behalf of the Indiana State Bar Association that someone without the requisite qualifications could not provide services as a notorio publico to immigrants.
The firm has an impressive portfolio of cases handled. These cases have not only benefited the firm's clients, but also set precedents for others.
