Whenever we hear about new Skoda models, it can be difficult to contain the excitement. One of the earliest indicators is a sketch of a prospective concept car that could be seen at a future Motor Show for a formal reveal. However, sometime Skoda will tease the customers (and dealers) with a sketch of an upcoming production car. If you’ve been following the Skoda latest models, you may already have heard of the Kamiq. Let’s take a closer look at what these sketches have revealed so far.

The 2020 Skoda Kamiq

This will be the Czech car manufacturers smallest SUV, and it looks a lot like the Vision X concept car that we saw last year. This isn’t a criticism, many car industry insiders were extremely impressed with this concept, and they bemoaned that it was not a production vehicle. The Kamiq even has those distinctive scrolling indicators that made a big impression on the car buying public that saw them.

Not the China Kamiq

The design sketches show the front and rear of this baby SUV, and they illustrate that it’s not to be confused with the Kamiq that was revealed for a Chinese release last ...
... year. This will be the global Skoda Kamiq release car, and it’s quite different. The body styling is heavily influenced by the aforementioned Vision X concept that we saw at last year's Geneva Motor Show.

Going Deeper in Design

Some of the critical design cues include touches, such as a new split headlight where the LED daytime running lights are separated from the main beams, a front bumper silver insert that acts as a skid plate and dynamic scrolling front and rear indicators. These features combined with the Vision X body styling are undoubtedly striking. The Skoda Kamiq certainly looks like a small buffed up SUV, and it’s sure to garner a lot of praise and fans if it lives up to its sketches.

At the rear, the Skoda Kamiq has the C-shaped tail lights that we saw on the Vision X concept. The tailgate shaper and rear bumper configuration also hark back to this concept. So, if you need more angles to look at, the Vision X concept images taken in Geneva are a good way to fill in the gaps.

The MQb-AO Platform

Car industry insiders have speculated that the Kamiq will use the Volkswagen Group's MQB-AO platform to underpin the SUV. This is the same platform architecture that been used to underpin other releases, such as the latest VW Polo, the Audi A1, and the new T-Cross.

Under the Bonnet

It’s expected that the powertrains will be small capacity three and four cylinder turbocharged engines available in petrol and diesel. These will probably be paired with a manual or dual clutch automatic transmission, but we don’t have any idea if all wheel drive will be an option.
