The NBA is an exciting league that is constantly changing. The league seems to expand and move teams more often than a lot of other sports. One team that came as a result of league expansion was the Orlando Magic. They have since become one of the best teams in the NBA, currently holding the number two spot out of all of the teams in the Eastern Conference. They have had some great players pass through their program including basketball greats Shaquille O'Neal, Penny Hardaway, Tracy McGrady, and most recently Vince Carter and Dwight Howard. They have a gotten to the playoffs for more than half of the years they have been in the league and have been very successful in building a team that can contend for the NBA Championship.

Based out of Orlando, FL, the team was first created in 1989. The name of the team was voted on by local fans through the local newspaper and between names such as the "Juice" the "Magic", and the "Heat", the name was decided on. The Magic refers to the huge influence that Disney has in that area of the state. Disney employs thousands of people and it made sense to attribute that name to the ...
... new team.

The Orlando Magic were added as an expansion team along with three others including the Charlotte Hornets, Minnesota Timberwolves, and the Miami Heat. Florida was only going to be allowed one team but after some well thought out pitches, the league decided to allow both teams into the NBA. The Orlando Magic were the first professional sports team in the area and they have been one of the better expansion teams to come into the NBA.

In previous eras, the Magic have done fairly well in attracting some big talent from around the league. Quite possibly their best draft pick to this point might be when they picked up Shaquille O'Neal in 1992. He has proven to be one of the best basketball centers to play the game and when he was paired with Penny Hardaway they made a few pushes to the Eastern Conference Finals but were unable to secure an NBA championship. A few years after Shaquille was traded and Penny was injured, they picked up Grant Hill and eventually Tracy McGrady. Even with this young new talent it wasn't enough to get the Magic back into real playoff contention.

The current Orlando Magic team may be the best roster that the franchise has been able to assemble so far. With Dwight Howard dominating the post and the boards, they have an unmistakable presence inside. Not only that, they acquired Vince Carter over the offseason and he has proven to be a clutch player for big games. They are helped on the wings by J.J. Reddick, and they have a great point guard and ball handler in Jameer Nelson. The team has had a great season so far, totaling over 50 wins, and they look to be real contenders this year in the East and could possibly make a return to the NBA Finals this year.
