The most commonly found storage facility is the warehouse. Though there are other variations to the term "warehouse" as in computer server farms and storage tanks. But only a few storehouses are spacious in capacity and have a comprehensive framework that simultaneously supports the unloading of multiple railroad cars and in-bound trucks that carry suppliers' goods alongside loading of numerous trucks for customer deliveries.

There are basically five different variations of warehouses:

A Private warehouse is one where ownership lies with the channel resellers and suppliers for their operational activities regarding distribution. For example, a leading retail chain would operate from their particular region-hub warehouses for supplying goods to their respective outlets.

Public warehouses serve short-term distribution requirements and are therefore let out on lease. For example, some retailers may at times have extra requirements for storage space apart from their own private warehouses. Like in a situation, they may purchase a great volume of merchandise for promotional activities and lease out a public ...

Automated warehouses cater to niche customers as they are automated in all aspects of storage (loading, unloading etc) making use of computer technology and robotics. The entire premises are automated from the conveyor belt that carries the products to fully automated areas wherein manpower is at its minimum for storing the voluminous goods which are moved around in pallets (platforms containing large volumes of goods) across long distances or are stored at great heights with the help of machines (such as cranes).

A climate-controlled warehouse is one that engages in storage activities for a variety of goods, inclusive of those that have to be handled in a special way. There are enormous freezers for frozen goods; humidity-controlled facilities for delicate goods (such as flowers and food items) and dirt-free hygienic rooms for extremely sensitive goods such as computer equipment.

Distribution centers are storage places where storage activities are temporary in nature. Such a centre is a point of a junction in the distribution chain wherein the goods are received from various suppliers and are then shipped outwards to multiple customers. In other words, a distribution center is a warehouse that is utilized for the handling of perishable products (such as farm produce) which is unloaded early during the day and is distributed to the various customers towards the end of the same day.

Main processes in warehousing include:

*Receiving the goods
*Storing away the goods
*Preparing an order and picking the goods
*Shipping the goods
*Managing the goods' inventory

Some warehouses sometimes provide special services such as "kitting" and "co-packing".

A Warehouse Management System (WMS) is in place in large storehouses in order to track the direction of the material/goods. This database system is monitored and updated on a computer by the Logistics team in order to increase the efficiency of the store with an accurate up-to-date record of the inventory transactions.
